And in case you wondered, the connector covers come in the lesser colours of black, blue, yellow, grey and ivory at no extra cost. Brown and green ones are available but cost an extra 10p! STRIPES ARE NOT AN OPTION.

No, you're not being thick.
No, they generally don't have serial ports
Yes, USB is next.

This was only meant to be a cheap interim solution until I get a USB solution designed, however it's been useful and given me a chance to check out the performance of the ALDL interface. Some people would like an interface now however and these are comparatively cheap and easy to knock out.

I've only got a clunky old laptop with a serial port which I don't intend to replace until it breaks rather than because it's last year's/millenium's processor/colour - don't forget that the typical computer is contributing to global warming just because it's waiting for you to it the keyboard! I figure that a lot of people will still use older machines for ElanScan runs.

I can also see the legs of a transistor a lot better than a surface mount USB interface device, which is useful when I'm making up boards!

Okay, I'm interested in either Serial or USB connector, but Geoff, what will this wonder-tech cost...

Oh, and Gizmondo not only went bust, they got sued by MTV Europe, and Jordon Grand Prix, and then one of the founders had a famous Ferrari Enzo car crash in California... I'll stick to an old laptop for Elanscan. Don't forget when Windows Vista finally launches older laptops will become cheaper still

Ah, an Elan and tech, are what simple ways to spend money :roll:

Sorry Ian. I couldn't resist using my pseudonym.

I have yet to tot up the cost, but it looks like it will be about £15 + P&P for the serial version above. I've got to build a few up and check them out then I'll post details.

PS I forgot to say that I bought my laptop second hand, for the kid's school work. Oh, I hadn't realised, I can use it to talk to the car too!

That's why they're really cheap! They run on Windows CE so if I did anything it would be useful for other deivces too. Not that I've even started yet...

There's a standard 9 way D type socket for the pc and a 10 way plug for the car.

Stupid question, does this program run in winders 98? You guys know I am a Mac-man but I found a cheap IBM ThinkPad that runs 98 and wanted to get it just to run ElanScan, will 98 work? Thanks guys

Tony, it's the next generation diagnostics to ours. Look for OBDII - there's plenty of readers about but whether there's anything quite as good as ES...... :roll:
