I have got hold of a laptop so will give ElanScan a go asap.

I may be able to have a look tomorrow but most likely it will be Sat/Sun.

Hello Guys, and Geoff in particular,

I have now got Enright`s lovely ECU, and it does indeed look identcal to my N/A unit. Needless to say i can`t contain my desire to try it but i have a question.

Do you think i should replace the mem-cal unit with my existing one, or do you think i should just try the complete ECU as it stands ??

Any input gentlemen ?

Oliver,

I think that 'stupid boy' bought an Isuzu ECU. I'm going from memory, which has never been that good and gets worse with age, which probably explains why some people think I hijack posts. I don't, it's just I forget what I started to talk about. Now where was I? :-D

If I'm correct and it's an Isuzu ECU, the MEMCAL will be different and you want to use your old one. If we manage to get ElanScan to talk to the ECU, we should be able to work out how to do a memory dump of the MEMCAL and Alan can spend a few hours trying to decipher it. It's good that you ramble when your older because it's just struck me that there must be another command word for dumping the memory rather than reading the engine status and it might be the same as the turbo ECU. Must try and remember that for future reference!

Anyway, bottom line is, change the MEMCAL.

I tried my cable out today on my N/A car and can confirm that it doesn't seem to work.

All I got were 'BAD ECHO' and then some hex numbers just like Oliver got originally.

If anyone wants me to do any testing then feel free to ask although I may only have use of the laptop for a bit longer (i.e. until someone at work needs it).

It would be great if together we could get this to work. I was looking forward to doing some runs with ElanScan hooked up.

Grant.

Grant,

Sorry to hear that. If you want a full refund on the interface, just send it back.

Could you do me one favour though. In ElanScan, there is a function to download the contents of the MEMCAL into the pc. There is a faint chance that this might work on the N/A. It is under | File | Dump PROM to BIN... | It will either have five attempts at loading and stop or it will download to a binary file. If it is the latter, could you zip and post a copy of the file please.

Thanks for your help and updating the other thread.

Geoff,

I`ll also try your idea. Hello to Grant, it`s nice to see us poor N/A owners growing in numbers !!

Hello all,

I was going to swap the mem-cal units over but i noticed that the Isuzu unit is missing pin 66 from the connector (bottom row of pins, extreme left) as you look down at it. This being the case i chickened out and just fitted the complete Isuzu ECU.

I connected the battery.

I switched on the ignition.

I waited for the explosion (there was none.)

The fuel pump started running.

The CEL illuminated.

I turned the key and : It started immediately and now appears to run properly ie no stalling, flat spots and settles down to a proper idle when warm. I can hardly believe that it may be fixed. It hasn`t run properly for 2 years!!!!! I am very pleased. However, i haven`t driven it yet as i have to adjust the rear wheel bearings for MOT Tuesday.

Do you think i should swap the mem-cal units? I am just referring the the abscence of pin 66.

Right, back on topic. ElanScan still does not work, i attempted a PROM dump and got the message 5 CONSECUTIVE COMMAND 2 FAILURES.

So in summary, My Elan is now possibly fixed thanks to Enright, but ElanScan, as Grant has confirmed, still dosen`t work on N/A`s.

Hello,

Blimey it has been a busy day!

I had forgotten how good the thing went - even with only 130 bhp.
However, after a mile or two the CEL illuminated, although it kept running well.

Got home, no faults stored so i changed the mem-cal for the original Elan part, went for another drive, still goes well but no CEL this time so i presume a perameter or two are different between the Elan engine and the Isuzu installation.

So apart from the fact ElanScan still won`t work i now have an Elan that does! :D

Excellent news Oliver. I would have recommended using the Lotus mapping but it looks like you've found that out for yourself. If I remember correctly, there are some a pair of unused pins on both ends of the MEMCAL, so it should function correctly.

I'll see what I can do to talk to the ECU and I'll probably start searching for Isuzu information - if you have any info (e.g. part number) on the ECU to hand, could you let me have it please?

Hi Geoff,

Sorry i took a while to get back, work, work, work.

It passed the MOT so i`ll bring her to Donington.
Did about 100 miles on Sunday and it runs like a swiss watch.

The Isuzu ECU has some numbers on it. These are :

8160868590
16086859
service no. 01227752

I think Enright said it came from a Isuzu I-mark RS

I`m looking for another one pronto just in case!

Hi Geoff,

Hope you are keeping well ! Still can`t believe i have a running Elan - going to Brands Hatch on Sunday for the Lipscombe "parade". Are you going ? it is easy for me - Lipscombe is 1.5 miles away! I am not quite off topic because if you are going i shall bring your bits and pieces for you. Otherwise i`ll look forward to meeting you at Donington.

Regards

Oliver,

Unfortunately I'm not, so it will have to be Donington. Glad to hear you're enjoying your car again though.

Hi Geoff,

Brands Hatch was good, i think we got the record (311 cars) It was like being on the M25 rather than a race track.

We are arriving Saturday about 3pm ish and are staying at the Holiday Inn Express (East Midlands airport).

The Elan is still running very well.
