My first Elanscan file

Postby ShaunM » Wed 17.06.2009, 23:17

Hi all, a HUGE thanks to rip for running elanscan on my car at Snetterton this weekend. So now I have the file as a base reading (the car seems to be running fine to me and Iain thought it was okay too). I was wondering if anyone could have a look at my file and give it the once-over and offer any advice on problem areas.

Many thanks,

Shaun

2 Knock events: 1 at 22secs, 2nd at 227secs
1.4 degrees knock retard applied on second event, no retard applied on first event.

I'll leave it to the wizards to say if this is unusal or a problem.

Sorry to highjack this thread a little but how does one open these files as I have Elanscan, & they are ecu files & my machine wont open them. What do you open them with. Tried 'Tuner pro' but no luck.

Thanks--stuart

Thanks Tony, waiting for response from others...

Is there anything on the elanscan to tell if the Coolant pump is working or not? There is a small fluid leak underneath the pump. Am going to try the trick with the wire tonight (as found on the wiki).

You view them with Elanscan itself. File > Open.

No.

I will get around to reading these files..honest. Nick's too.

Coolant pump: If you mean the main one at the bottom of the block, then you're engine will overheat very quickly without this, but it's a pretty sturdy mechanical thing so I don't see how this one will stop. They usually require replacement when leaks occur & if seized, your engine will not turn because it is powered by the timing belt.
This leaves the electric pump, which pumps in the reverse direction when the engine is stopped. If you run the engine until the coolingfans cut in, then turn the engine off & then turn the ignition on again, you should hear it.

The paperclip test will only show fault codes, which Elanscan lists in plain English. It retains these for 50 start/stops of the engine I believe.

I've had a look through your log file now, Shaun.
As Saska pointed out, you have a very mild case of knock but this is corrected very quickly (by only 1 degree too) so is not serious. Backing off the base timing by a degree should bring this in check, but it would be worth checking this with a timing light first. I suspect your timing has simply slipped forward a little.
It looks to be running cooler than mine. This could mean that your cooling system simply runs more efficiently than mine, or it could indicate that you have weak coolant (water conducts heat better than antifreeze). You could get a garage to pop a hydrometer in your header tank to check this (or possibly Halfords may sell one). If your coolant is too weak, this will not inhibit corrosion properly. It's not a cause for concern because it is easy to check.

Edit: Scrap that about your coolant temp. I've been looking at other files & it looks fine. Unless you know the coolant is fresh & corrctly concentrated, getting it checked by hydrometer wuld be worthwhile though (Gerald may have done this.)
You are not getting boost creep either, so no overboost to worry about (until you fall for the temptation to fit a big exhaust).

Other than that, I can't see anything I could not feel when I scanned it on Saturday (your car is quick, your wastegate appears to be working normally & you have a heavy right foot).

If you want to see a lot of knock & some overboost, check out a log I took of mine last November. I could even hear it pinking at the time. This was taken shortly after my Piper was fitted, which accounts for the high (over 0.65 bar) levels of boost.

Snipped a load of sensible stuff from Rip.
Shaun
What exhaust, PCE have you got fitted to the S2?
Any other mods -- like an ESM chip (Doesn't look like it from the .ecu file)?

Thanks for the info - heavy right foot was only for the purposes of elan scan!
Tony, the car is completely standard with a stainless steel exhaust from SJ Sportscars, BUT (as I found out from the B Service + MOT at GST Performance) the cat and pre-cat have been removed. I know when and why this was done (Lakeside  ) and it does give me extra bhp over the standard S2 (not that I'd notice, I've only driven SE's before)

Have tested the circulating pump and it is working fine. I suspect a loose hose and have tightened up the clamps a little. Will have a chat to Gerald tomorrow and will keep an eye on it. Samco hoses might be my one and only upgrade....

Thanks again for the feeback
