confused

Postby nicowalker1 » Sun 28.06.2009, 07:43

im having problems with loss of power at the moment, could somebody have a look at these, and see if you can diagnose the problem?>
I know the timing is out as im getting knock, but cant get my head around the boost being 0.98 at peak without the engine management cutting in. Also none of the boost is actually getting to the engine as above around 0.5bar i loose power (no enginge management light) if i lift off the gas it actually goes faster.

I've gotta be honest I haven't looked at the Zip File... But here goes again

Jammed waste gate...

If you fully floor the car does the boost go to about 0.95 bar, but not seem to go anywhere, the car may even seem to stutter...

See here

im well aware of the common waste gate issue, i did have a problem with that at first and the engine managment light came on and gave me the jerk.
Since i gave it the wiggle that hasnt happened.
I forgot to add the boost is fine before the engine gets up to temperature, its only when it warms up i have the problem

If your base timing is out, you will get knock (as you are) and if it's too far out when it's up to temperature and the ECU allows you full boost, it will not run well (as you are). Get the base timing done! The slight peaks up to ~1 bar are no sufficient to induce fuel cutoff - the ECU need to see this for >1second.

You might also want to change the thermostat as your temperature is not well regulated and dips below 80°C when driving.

I didn't know that.
Did you get the base timing set, Nick?
If you don't have access to a timing light, then the stopwatch method I described to you should get this close.

yeah, i baught a new one yesterday, planned on doing it after fitting my exhaut. That didnt go to plan as i cant get the bolts out of the bit that goes to the turbo i spent 4 hours with wd40 heating it up letting it cool etc so now im left without an exhaust at all so i cant drive it to a garage to get it done.

Use penetrating oil which is designed to penetrate and lubricate (unlike WD40) and try a pipe wrench/Stilsons.

I agree with Geoff. I hate WD40. It's ok for indoor use, but nothing else.
I don't know what to suggest because I don't even know which bolts you are talking about, the 3 on the triangular falnge on the pre-cat housing? The nuts on my PCH came off with a bit of effort (& a 24" breaker bar :D ) but didn't damage the bolts.
I would have thought you could still drive it even if it was embarrassingly loud?

I don't see anything wrong with trying.
The heat is so fierce around that area that any oil will be burned off quite quickly anyway.
