cant get elan scan working

elan scan wont work for me .
ihave a recent laptop and down loaded both thr versions of elan scan from the site.
plug the lead into car and laptop start prog pc asks for elanscan interface drivers ?
i have selected all comms ports manualy 1 throu 20 still not communicating just comm port not found or inactive....
what am i doing wrong ?

cool got that working went for quick run in traffic no clear roads here how do i post the results ?

Do a run from cold (see Wiki), save the file (as a .ecu), zip it and upload it onto the forum.

Yep. Forum won't accept .ecu files but will take .zip files!

Just a note: the ALDLINTERFACES website is moving. Don't be alarmed if you can't get to links found in this section, Geoff will post new links soon, hopefully later tonight.

REMEMBER: You should not have the interface plugged in while you are installing the drivers. For XP, if you plugged in the interface and Windows tried to install drivers, then go into Device Manager and remove the broken driver. It probably will be at the bottom with a big yellow question mark. Just right-click on it and select uninstall. For the newer Windows versions, the process is similar but I don't know the specific steps.

To get the NEWEST FTDI drivers go to http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm and download the executable 2.08.28 WHQL Certified driver.

The executable is http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM20828_Setup.exe Download this, don't run across the web. For XP, this should be able to run by right clicking it (after downloading it) and selecting "run as". For Windows Vista, Win7 or Win8 you probably should use the run as admin/supervisor option. I don't have Win7 installed anywhere but installing drivers requires admin rights.
