What have I got here then ?

Hi guys,

I've recently started to think that my elan might enjoy a spot of mountaineering courtesy of Alan's finest, and since I was climbing all over the car anyway (to find an over-excitable microwave sensor) I thought I'd take some time to locate the ECU ready for when I get my order in...

.. so I was quite surprised to discover that my ECU is already missing the metal shielding for the memcal section and instead has a bunch of gaffer tape there.

The obvious question, then, is what do I have in there currently ?
And this is where I'm hoping you experts can help me out

I've attached the PROM dump I made with ES, and here's a bad photo I took:




Any ideas ?

Van Aaken don't list the Elan or Isuzu petrol engines so it may be a special. They claim to lift boost and change maps in the same way that Alan has, so I suspect he will be very interested to look at the changes.

Mine had a Superchip PROM, which just inhibited the fuel cutoff thereby allowing the MBC to operate. The good news is that you can still use a Mountain chip as the ony part of the original MEMCAL that is used is the hybrid circuitry to the right of your picture.

I'm away from base at the moment and so I can't check out the binary today. However, the ANXZ std suggests its a simple copy of a standard PROM.

Perhaps it had something more esoteric at some point in the past.

probably not a factor and likely you can still drop the mountain chip in there which then would bypass this chip regardless of what it is and then you get the mountain fun

Now the handbags have been lowered I'll return to the point

I had a look and while it isn't the same as the stock ANXZ binary it hasn't got any table changes in anything significant (timing, boost, a/f ratio, etc). Since the checksum stored in the file and the one calculated from it are different I suspect corruption during the download (you need a pretty noise free interface or a few attempts to get a clean download).

I'm happy to try repeatedly dumping the prom to see if I can get an error-free version if you're interested ?

Either way I suspect you'll be getting an order from me sometime soon (just after I have time to work out which chip I need )

Yeah, I did fire them off an email too to see what they'd say, I got a response this morning, it's a bit hand wavy but this is what they said:

Hi,

Thank you for your enquiry.

That is indeed one of our chips, it looks like it was supplied some time ago. Unfortunately, I will not have any records of this installation due to a recent server change.

However, I can tell you that your Elan will have gained approx 10-15bhp and 10% more torque, the rev limiter may have moved up by 500rpm too (this can vary by request, but we aim to keep it sensible).

it came from a sales manager there which probably explains the wavyness.

seems like there may still be something to be gained by looking at climbing everest...
