Was there ever a conclusion to this thread in terms of off-the-shelf parts or a refurb? I've seen some modern bits from RA.

yes.

the stator was damaged.

bought a new stator and everything has been ok since them

i did buy a replacement alternator from SJ because i was getting desperate. which i used until i converted to close loop... and then found out the SJ alternator didnt support close loop. so i changed back to the original (barely) alternator with the upgraded regulator, new diode back and new stator. which has been running fine for probably 2 years now.
