Left headlight not popping up sometimes

Postby Motocompo » Sat 15.08.2026, 11:10

Hi,

on my 95 Elan the left headlight sometimes needs 5 or more attampts to pop up. The left one is operating perfectly fine.

I repaired the gear unit with the set from SJ a year ago. It worked well until half a year ago.

If the light does not pop up, I can turn the knob on the top of the motor and then it works again.

Can I fix it by adjusting the headlight? It´s a little bit too low when shut of, so there´s a small gap to the rest of the front part of the car.

Also does anyone know how the headlight motor knows when to stop? I have the garage manual but I could not fugure it out.

Thanks for any help.

Usually when you have those symptoms the issue is the linkages that make the headlamp pods move.

They may have the wrong lengths but more often than not they just need to be freed up and greased a bit so they move freely.

My theory (I probably could state this as fact and nobody would argue) is that the control module senses the motor stalling because there is too much friction within the linkages and it thinks the part is already up and stops powering the motor..

OK thank you.

So the motor turns until there is a resitance and then stops because then the pod is closed (or opend). Is that correct?

I´ll check if I can adjust and grease the linkage, thanks.
