Rear bumper side light replacement

Postby nelumbo_nucifera » Thu 24.09.2026, 00:27

Hello.
I'm new here. I just acquired a 1991 LE in what appears to be completely original condition (even the tires are from '91!). Out all of the lights on the car, only two do not illuminate - one of the driver's side rear turn signal lights and the driver's side rear bumper side light (as seen in the photo). I was able to remove the turn signal light quite easily and it will be replaced asap. However I'm stumped on how to remove the side light.

I unbolted the antenna motor and removed the carpeting and I can see the back side of the light (pictured below), but I have no clue how to gain access to it to remove it. I'm also afraid to use any force (i.e. twisting and pulling) because I don't want to break anything. I also had a look around the site and couldn't find anything that covered this topic. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! Thank!

Solved... painfully.

First, jack the car up, remove the wheel and the rear fender liner. That's the easy part. Next, remove the two nuts that are holding the lens in place. The forward nut, pretty easy. The rear nut, practically impossible. Access is difficult and space is limited. Having the right tool would probably make this "easy" repair much less frustrating. That right tool would be an 8mm ratcheting wrench. Attempting with a ratcheting socket wrench will induce much frustration, but it's possible if you have limber arms and small hands and a very low profile socket & wrench.

Good luck.

yes, when you own one of these the toolbox has a tendency to bloat.

i have 2 sets of ratchet wrenches without gaps from 8mm to 19mm both fixed and flex head.
sockets in standard, deep and shallow variations. corner adapters, extentions, "wobble" adapter... basically when temu starts showing exoteric tools it not uncommon that something is added to the cart and stays there waiting for the lottery, or.. the day it looks like it will be useful
