central locking

can anyone here recomend a decent, east to fit and reliable central locking kit, that i can fit myself, and wont break the bank

I know how to take the door trims off after fitting new door locks, and then having to order a full set of trim srews and fittings after finding that most of them were missing !!!!!

Central locking and actuators are already in place, I am guessing you mean keyless entry? At any rate, I don't see why you would need to get inside the doors at all, you just add the unit and tap into the wiring before it goes into the doors.

They are all pretty much the same, installation also will be alike regardless which unit you go with... I have used a few brands in the past, and honestly, I just don't think that it matters.

The only consideration that comes to mind right off is availability of replacement remotes. Check with the manufacturer to find out how easy it will be to get a replacement should you lose one, how much it will cost, and how long they will be available for. Obviously, you are more likely to run into problems there with a generic/offbrand...

Does anyone have a clue as to why my central locking just plain old doesnt?? when i fit the new door locks the other day i had to also reconnect a few of the rods too, and also the door speakers dont work on either side, could this be an indication of somone messing around in there before me and bodging this up??

i just got confirmation of my acces to the manuals so i'll have a good scoot thru them when i get back from work

Yup, sounds like a bodger got there first! Welcome to Elan motoring!

Sounds like you are going to have to do some continuity tests on the wires for the central locking in the first place. The control unit is under the driver’s side of the dash (rhd) and can be released from there by undoing one nut and loosing the other. (you might have to remove the steering column lower shroud to get to them) There is a section in the manual specifically for the central locking, with colour codes and what happens to the wires when the actuators are triggered. if you can't find it drop us a mail.

Cheers Chris, good to know theres another out there like me who likes to find things out by ripping em to bits, my side comes from fixing helis in the army, i love getting into them wires

its a case of having to I think, that and the fact I have just fitted a new alarm to the car and was stuck upside down in the foot wells for several days, figuring out what all the wires did. Always helps to know what everything does
