Love posts like this. It shows that when you have exhausted all common sense approaches there is always another mindset that can approach a problem from a different angle. True example of the power of forums! :)

Having trouble with mine
Good snap with 1st start but no engine turn, then 2nd start away she goes sweet as a nut.
Going through the earths / relays / battery but may still be the Motor on the way out ( 95,000)
S&J want around £400 for a recon but Internet has £ 91 free post ( Latvia ) or £520 odd.
Anyone any experience of buying one ?
Peter

i have a spare new unit from rockauto, as well as rebuild kits. long story short, my starter was fine when i gone through all that faff years ago... it was a bad earth. if your willing to pay me a little bit more than whatever it set me back back then. and give me your old unit for refurb. we may be able to reach a mutually advantageous agreement.

feel free to get in touch.

Pete
If you follow the tips in the previous posts for your diagnosis that might save you some cash and what I’m told is a tricky job.
Your description does lead me to thinking the starter is failing, but it could be a lot of other things.
However
A couple of questions
Is the car very high mileage?
Does you car have an immobiliser?
As said check all earths
Get the battery tested
A simple first check after ruling out the obvious.
I would test by bridging the start relay contacts and coils in turn, to check you still get the same two stage operation, this will eliminate the relay and ignition switch.

Sorry
I re read your post
I wouldn’t think 95K was excessive starters last a long time but if there’s a build up of crud clutch dust rust etc in the unit drive or solenoid has dried out, the fault you describe could show.
Does it do it every time hot or cold ?

Pete, the starter is a bit of a pain to take off but really easy to take apart and clean and work out what's wrong - I have most of the parts if you need them.
