Indicators do not self cancel

The indicator stalk is a form of consumable.
I believe it is a VW part, (need to look it up) and cheap as crisps. Also very easy to change.

My recommendation: replace it

Not VW, but it is cheap as chips!

It's a 'standard' Vauxhall part, and the one as fitted to the elan is for an Astra G - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/195615638992

If you remove the one you have, it will have a GM part number on it, so you can check that the one I linked is correct.

It is also used on the Vectra B, Omega, Cavalier and others of the era. I use an Omega one in my car because it has the cruise control buttons on it - they all 'plug and play' with the Elan.

I had this and perhaps the fix could be even cheaper. The stalk had slid ever so slightly out of its mounting block which caused the self cancellation to stop working. Worth checking first.

Well it sort of is. You can access the wires from the new stalk, and pinky wrote a thread on how to add the various bits under the bonnet (here).

I use the buttons to control my radio, so I’ve not tried it, but I believe pinky has it all connected and working.

I was intrigued to do a "cruise control" search and found that thread.
Rather excellent add on by Pinky, and very well executed too.

I have had the covers off the indicator stalk to check if the switch was seated correctly - it was. I guess that there must be something attached to the steering wheel shaft that knocks the switches off when you straighten up. As it seems the indicators sometimes do cancel, could the shaft not be aligned straight ahead correctly?

It's only a small plastic 'peg' which comes out when you indicate, and gets pushed back in when the wheel rotates past a point where it is knocked back in......

it is part of the indicator arm, not the steering wheel (well, the bit that knocks it back in is on the wheel, but all the moving/wearing parts are in the stem).

It is possible that over the years it has worn, and is now slightly out of alignment, or the grease has picked up 30+ years of dust and it's just had enough.

I suppose (like everything) it is possible to strip and rebuild the arm, but as a new one is about a tenner I have never bothered.

Hi just for anyone searching this hassle, I replaced stalk (which incorporated the switching mechanism) no joy, so stripped off wheel expecting the cancelling lug to be worn, it wasn't but I used a screwdriver to mimic the wheels lug that it couldn't cancel the plastic doo dad, then noticed that the whole stalk was a loose fit and with firm pressure could be moved about 2mm closer to the column centreline......

My fix (as the stalk was new) was to thoroughly clean the mating surfaces with metho then a light bit of superglue on the surfaces and dirty great big cable tie right round the stalk and steering column (crude but very effective - sorry in advance to the next owner ) Its hidden when the cowling is re fitted and now works well.
