Headlamp Motor Removal

Hi all,

I know we had a write up for this, but now I've got the parts (little plastic bushings) the page on the main site has stopped being a hyperlink, and I can't retrace my steps

Does anybody have the write up, or am I being dense and should I go look in the manuals when I get home?

Curse the fading twilight of autumn, I've put this job off too long!

Thank your again everyone at Lotus Elan Central for turning what would have been yet another expensive visit by this numpty to a Lotus dealer, into another excuse to sit in the sunshine and tinker the Elan's inards, getting to know my car better

Okay, I'm going to copy this in the "need help" section as the parts are spread on my workbench as I type...and it is a big numpty question, for I am a big numpty

When the motor repair guides talk of regreasing the parts.... what should I use?

I'm contemplating using a petroleum jelly grease (aka vaseline ) as I have a pot in my workshop, and it is a grease with good non-water properties, but should I use anything different?

Called Criswell Lotus, they suggested a fully synthetic grease. Went to Autozone, bought the most expensive "race tested" synthetic grease... Went home, rebuilt motor, fixed motor backwards, didn't notice, rebuilt car, noticed lights now alternated one up one down, found backwards motor, dismantle again, rotate motor 180 degrees, reassemble, skin knuckles, bleed on various bolts to ensure extra iron to make car healthy, finish....

Explain to wife why a three hour job took all day!

For all those who've never checked their light-pod motors, heres a shot showing the new plastic cylinder bushings and the orange crumbles that were all that was left of the original parts.

For $12 I'll be replacing the right motors in the next couple of weeks!!!

That brings back memories! I had a nice pile of orange crumbles as well I'm still finding pieces in my garage a few months after fixing it.

Took me most of the day to fix mine as well... maybe we should start the "Numpty Club" for the technically challenged
