So Cal Repair Recommendation

Postby KO6SY » Sat 07.07.2012, 23:39

I just had my Catalytic converter replaced as well as the down pipe which was cracked and some other previously bad work restored on my M100. Scott's Headers & Mufflers in Beaumont 951 845 3996 did an excellent job and I now have a legal converter. Thoroughly recommend Scotty!! The whole thing cost $500 + tax and when I priced the parts a down pipe was $200 and a cat was $200, Scotty rebuild the down pipe so didn't need to spend on that.

Good stuff, Malcolm. Glad to hear you're set for another year of smog checks. I hope you and the Elan are both doing well.

Doug,
I have been doing a lot of traveling but hope to get to the Fairbrook English Car show - will you be there?

QUESTION - maybe you can advise. Since having the new cat fitted I notice the boost doesn't reach where it used to, I was able to get it to 0.8 in the past and even achieved wheel spin when it kicked in but now cant get more than 0.5 boost. Obviously too much back pressure but does it mean the turbo is shot? Or does the ECU have to relearn what is going on? I will have too put it on the Elanscan and see what is happening.

Advise

Hi Malcolm,

I've also been traveling lots, so sorry for the slow reply. If the cat is not restricting, boost should go right back up where it was. There's nothing for the ECU to re-learn, as far as I know. When my cat failed, I couldn't get above about .5 Bar. With the new cat, boost immediately went back up. If yours still won't boost, it makes one wonder if the replacement cat is somehow defective. A proper replacement shouldn't restrict the exhaust enough to keep you from reaching peak boost.

Other possibilities: wastegate stuck open (maybe related to downpipe repair?) or intake leaks? Boost control solenoid disconnected? Any codes in the ECU?
