Advice on replacing silencer

My back box/muffler/silencer has given out, and I don't have any extra money to spend. I may put a picture up tomorrow, but for now suffice to say the inlet pipe broke free from the box.

I'm thinking about just getting a universal replacement, maybe magnaflow or some such brand available at parts stores. I know the inlet pipe is 2" and there should be just one outlet pipe in the center. The muffler is overall 14" long, and oval measuring about 9" by 6". As long as the replacement is the same length and fits in the space??? Anybody have any strong feelings about any particular brands I should definitely avoid?

If it helps, an S2 exhaust (rear box) is near as dam it identical and they're cheaper.

Personally I can't see that there would be much difference on price between any possible solution.

Mine was welded two years ago and its been no trouble since. (It was only leaking as opposed to being broken off)

May be worth considering as a money saving exercise.

Smaug wears a 2.5" Magnaflow. I'll get the exact part number - you can see the outlet in several pictures in the "Return of the Green Monster" thread. I think it looks like it was made for the car and I love the sound. No pre-cat, magnaflow California-legal main cat and magnaflow silencer. It's louder than stock but so smooth and mellow no one will ever mistake it for a hormonally-challenged Civic.

I got a new muffler yesterday. Not sure the brand, but the shop had it in stock. It's a type referred to as a "turbo" muffler, whatever that means. I'm told it has to do with the number of turns the airflow takes inside. I told them I had liked the way my car sounded on the stock muffler, and they said the new one would probably sound about the same, because my original one was completely shot internally. They were right. It may be slightly louder, but it sounds great and smooth. Of course, I drove it for one day with no muffler at all, so anything would have been quieter.

They also had a magnaflow or flowmaster (can't remember which), but you could look right through it so I think all it would have done is move the noise about 14 inches farther aft.

the turbo style mufflers have baffles in them generally, similar to a flowmaster. Sounds like you did pretty well for them having it in stock. Not a frequent occurrence here in the states

I may have to take it back and have them re-do the installation though. A bit of afro-engineering. Maybe I'll get around to taking a picture, but it's weird. The new muffler is of almost exactly the same dimensions as the old, with the inlet and outlet in exactly the same locations, but the installer (for some unknown reason) did some cutting and welding that makes the pipe going into the box enter at an upward angle and the tailpipe do the same. The overall effect is not visible from outside, as the tailpipe comes out the back level, but the box is in there so that the front of it is higher than the rear. It's really strange. It seems like he thought he needed to do that so that it wouldn't get hit by the wishbone going over bumps or something. The funny thing is that by doing that, he made it so the tailpipe bumps the facia when I hit a bump.
