New Stainless system

Postby quantum » Fri 02.09.2011, 14:06

My previous exhaust was starting to get past its sell by date and a friend of mine offered to make a stainless one up for me. He asked if I wanted it straight through or a baffled, I asked for a baffled one, however, you guessed it he made it straight through....
Having driven it today, it is rather loud when you put your foot down, although it now has a nice burble when your foot is off the throttle; it also feels like it possibly picks up better, not that it was a slouch before. I have also heard of over boost but how do you know if you have it? :?

Could someone tell me if having this straight through box will have any detrimental effect on my car? My car is a 1992 SE 89k without a cat (still has the flat bit of pipe in the system) I think it may have been chipped due to USB lead connected to something in the n/s foot well.
Many thanks, any thoughts and help gratefully received. :)

The usb cable does not mean it has been chipped. Sounds like you bought an Elan with Elanscan cable included :)

Exhaust flow gets more critical as you get closer to the engine. If you still have the flat section, you will not be getting the maximum power gains.

You have not got overboost (yet). When you're doing 5500+ rpm with your foot hard down & the engine suddenly turns into a brake, throwing you forward at your steering wheel...that's overboost. You certainly won't mistake it!

Thanks for your reply, I will now have to just take it out for a long run to see if over 5500 rpm there is any difference. :D

:? If it has been chipped can you look at something to see if it has, I guess the ECU?

Cheers

As rip says, the first overboost adventure tends to stick in your mind. Full throttle out of a roundabout, serious engine braking, CEL light on & some c*appy Vauxhall overtaking you on the inside lane.

If you have the cable, run Elanscan, that will tell you which chip you have fitted.

If you are going to play over 5500rpm, keep a close eye on the boost guage, when it gets above .7 start backing off the throttle.

If it has been chipped, then you shouldn't have a problem if the boost guage goes up that high. With an Everest chip, it will go up to .95 I think.

Does elanscan show if you have a mountain chip? I don't remember it doing that. I do remember the 1499 id showing.

Actually, if you have a USB cable, find a laptop running XP, download and install ELANSCAN software, plug the cable into the USB connector in the laptop. Follow the guide and get the computer "talking" to the ECU. Then, start recording, start the car, leave it idle until it warms up and then take it out for a test drive. Return to home, let it calm down, shut off the car and then stop recording. Open the file and see if anything makes sense. If not, zip it up and post the .zip file to the forum and ask for someone to take a look.

If you can't find a laptop with XP, you can use Vista or Windows 7, but you need to get the proper drivers. You might need to get the newest drivers for XP. That should be explained on the ElanScan web page.

Your memory is fine, Chris. Elanscan does not tell you what chip you have.
It should give an accurate figure for target boost, which will not be 0.65bar if a mountain chip is fitted.

Prom ID at the top of the tree.

For some reason I can't upload, but Elanscan on my laptop displayed 1499 for the new chip, 9239 for the old. Old chip back in the car as the wiring is missing & brake upgrade not done yet.

9239? Sounds unusual but an open-loop one.
1499 is a closed-loop program (needs an O2 Sensor).

I'm guessing that you trying to upload the log file without zipping it first?

Thank you for your replies and information :D Went to Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire on Sunday to a Classic car show, great drive down and back on a mixture of motorways, 'A' roads and country lanes. Didn't experience any problems and the boost gauge was running at about 0.7+ on full chat...The car is running rich and when changing down it popped a couple of times after having done some fast driving. On the whole I'm pleased with its running, gauged of course by the size of the smile on my face..... :D Fuel consumption is down but I guess that is dependant on how heavy your foot is and is what you tend to get when you are enjoying yourself. I will see if I can get hold of a laptop and obtain Elan scan 8)
Again thanks for your help, what a great site.
