Novice Elan Owner Needs Exhaust Advice!

I have just stripped the engine underframe off my Elan and will be replacing the front short exhaust pipe to the turbo manifold as it has been bashed, when I removed the underframe I noticed that the longer front pipe that passes over the top of the frame has also got a flat section and when I put my finger inside you can feel the bore diameter considerably reduced. Can anyone tell me if this is standard or has it been damaged in the past? I always thought that if the bore was restricted in any way like this then you lose power. Should the bore be cylindrical all the way through or was this flat section intended so that the exhaust fits over the underframe? Your help will be appreciated.

It was 'Flattened' by the Lotus 'Technicians' at the time of production
There are a couple of theories as to why, one is that it prevents boost creep (which is another story).
Change the lot for a Peco stainless system if you are keeping the car for more than a couple of years. Tad over £300.
And throw in a chip........
And some upgraded brakes........
And.......
