NA not playing

Postby ghunterglas » Wed 18.12.2013, 15:13

Hi all, bit baffled & looking to pick brains,
I took the car out yesterday for the 1st time in a few weeks, started first time,
drove 30 miles to a meeting, when i got back to car after a couple of hours it wouldn't start.
turned over for ages but no ignition, managed to push it round & ran down a hill where i bump started it.
it ran at about 3000rpm for half a mile & then died,
called breakdown service ( top service from footman james insurance !) who came out, cleaned distributor/ rotor arm & changed plugs,
managed to get the car to run briefly, again it was fine revving high but when i let it get to idle it spluttered a little & cut out,
had the car recovered to mates garage in glasgow last night,
it started 1st thing this morning but wouldn't start again.
any ideas ? anyone had similar issues ?
any help appreciated

Bad Coil, Bad ignition Module, Bad Fuel Pressure Regulator, Bad Fuel Pump?

When it doesn't start do you have spark?

If not, do you have power to the coil? If not relay or fuses? If yes, bad coil or ignition module OR dirty connections between parts.

If yes, is fuel pressure OK. Bad regulator can cause either low or high fuel pressure issues.

Funny you should post this. My NA wouldn't start on Sunday for the first time since ownership. When cranking, you could smell fuel so that was getting through. Can you smell fuel when cranking yours? I sprayed the leads and coil and the car started.

As I say, I've never had that before. Could your problem be earth related?

Regards

Thanks for replies. I'll speak to mate tomorrow,
There was definitely fuel getting through, plugs were wet & the exhaust had a whiff of fuel
I could hear the fuel pump when I switched ignition on,
Quite annoyed as it was running brilliantly on way down.
Cheers g
I'll post findings as & when there is anything to report

Sounds electrical given the fact the fuel system seems to be running (too) well, and the fact it just went squiffy with little warning after a long run, sounds like something in the ignition electrics or earth system got dislodged or wet. Sounds like a T&E fix.

The N/A distributor main electronic parts are Daewoo Nubira. Worth a Google.

thanks for replies, all sorted & prize goes to Steve Roberts at SJ Sportscars for coming up with Coolant Temp Sensor as culprit.
( there's not really a prize ) first time i'd ever broken down too, followed swiftly by the landrover blowing a hose off the turbo the day after boxing day !
getting good at loading cars onto trucks !
happy new year.

Oh dear. BIG clue missed.

It is a pity Elanscan does not work with an NA. This would have shown a failed CTS quite clearly.

resolved but gutted at inconvenience. I can forgive as its SO much fun when performing normally !
- been thinking about this, what's amazing is that for a 24 year old car it is just so reliable and requires such little maintenance.
unlike the landrover ! which is turning into a clown car after 4years.
