Cant find USB Serial Converter in windows 7

Postby davidcgriffiths » Sun 05.08.2012, 19:35

I have just tried to run Elanscan using windows 7 & a USB cable I have just bought. I beleive I should select Comx but this is not shoen on the drop down menu. From WikiLEC I have searched for the USB serial converter which should be in Universal Serial Bus ontrollers but it is not showing. Can someone advise where I can find this or get the software to add to my computer. Tried microsoft but nothing shows in their downloads.

Or am I doing something completly wrong when I try & conect ???

Which ALDL adapter are you using? If it is a Serial type, then you need to concentrate on using an FTDI based converter instead of a cheap chinese clone or swap it out for a USB based reader completely. If you are trying to do this without an ALDL adapter, then you will have to figure out a lot of things like baud rate and address and stop bits.

If you have a real ALDL, USB adapter, then you need to install the proper drivers before you plug it in. Once the drivers are there, Windows should announce the new device and then either find the drivers itself or ask for where you put them. Once the device is installed, it will show up under serial ports and you can set the com port that ElanScan wants. Make sure you set the parity, port, address, rate and stop bits to what ElanScan wants. I don't have either Win 7 or an ALDL device so I don't know, but N,8,1 and choosing Com 1 thru 4 would be a good starting point. Once you set up the device, then you tell ElanScan the parameters.

Thanks Geoff, still unable to get my laptop working but managed to load drivers on 2 other laptops so my laptop is the problem. Will take a scan later this week.
