The pump in question is the electric water pump.

The pump only works when the engine is off, this is because it pumps coolant in the opposite direction to normal.

To check if this pump operates correctly, start the car and let the engine heat up until the electric fans cut in. (20 mins or more) The moment they start, turn off the ignition. Run round to the front of your car and place your hand on the motor, you'll feel it vibrating. Run back round and restart the car. Take her for a quick drive to cool her back down.

As a rule the electric pump is very rarely used.
