Code 24 and Bucking with the foot down

Postby tweetdriver63 » Mon 01.07.2013, 23:52

Recently noticed a problem. My car drives perfectly under normal circumstances, as long as I don't push the pedal to the floor. If I open the throttle like that, as soon as it hits about 4K on the rev counter it bucks pretty violently, won't accelerate, and the CEL comes on. The CEL stays on until I turn off the ignition, then when I turn it back on, the light will be out.

I just did the paperclip test and the only code is 24 -- Vehicle Speed Sensor.

Will a faulty VSS cause this kind of behavior, or is there something else going on?
Chris

Did you change transmission oil lately or opened your dashboard?

I did recently install Metal Monkey dial faces. I'm trying to remember if this started before that or not.

perhaps the cable is not connected properly in the speedometer.
I had the same issue after installing my Metal monkeys

Fixed it by placing the cable correctly :-)

Did yours run great/smoothly under moderate acceleration, but not when it got in the 4K RPM range with the pedal down?

I'll check it out.

Well, I took a look. At the top of the VSS there's a bit that has a kind of printed circuit thing that connects to it. That bit was bent against the back of the cluster. I pulled it back straight, which felt like maybe the plastic underneath had got broken, but once straight the problem was fixed and the car has gobs of power. I took it for a test drive and there was no bucking, no hesitation, and no CEL light. The car go like stink! I drove it around for a bit and couldn't help but put the petal down. You have to admit, when it's running like it's supposed to and you put your foot down, you're sporting a semi or there's something wrong with you. This car is so much fun. I'm afraid I may have to replace the VSS at some point, but for now I'm a happy camper.
