CO2 after Everest upgrade

Postby Gee0 » Sun 27.07.2008, 12:41

HI (not sure if this is the right place for this question but here goes)

I have done the Everest chip upgrade, but the car is due its first MOT since I have installed the ship.

IIRC someone has said that it may fail due to CO2 levels being different.

Can someone please advise me of what I need to do to ensure she passes the emmisions test.

Thanks in advance

I don't know anything about chips and upgrade etc. but I'd be very surprised if it has any effect on the emission test because the main point with the chip is increasing turbo boost. Someone will shortly have a better answer for sure...

Gerry, if you had a 9929 or 9939 memcal previously, it might need re-adjusting (and the cheapest way is probably to make sure that the MoT tester can do it when he's measuring the emission) but if you had a 9930 (which is most likely), you should be alright - read the service bulletin for details.

Im sure I have 9929 memcal

How do you adjust the co2 levels?
I couldnt see a write up on wiki about it.

The guy doing the mot wont have worked on an elan before.

thanks

It's done in service / diagnostic mode but hasn't been written up yet. My S2 doesn't have one, but I think it involves twiddling the pot (blue thing on the ECU) until the emissions are within limits.

I must say I never noticed a "Blue thingy" in or on th ECU when I fitted the chip.

Gerry

I can show you where "the blue thingy" is but you need an exhaust gas analyser to adjust it. Give me a call and come over.

Ive never done it but I belive it goes like this....

make sure the car is warm before you start
turn ingnition on...
put into service mode
start the car
run the engine whilst you put the gas analyser in the tail
wait for the analyser to register...note the reading
tweek the blue screw in one direction....
recheck the analyser to see if the numbers have gone up or down...
twiddle away until you get to about 2%~2.5%.....
turn the ignition to slot 1
take out of service mode
turn off

or at least that the way Ive thought it was done.....

cheers

Very nearly correct!

But to put it into service mode you start the car first, then put in the paperclip (otherwise it is in diagnostic mode).

I did a write-up on the procedure a couple of months ago (but cant find it now  ).

To locate the CO pot:-

open the glovebox, swing it all the way down by easing the catch past the lip on the dashboard, so it swings right down. If you haven't already emptied the glovebox, it will do it for you at this point :D .

Locate the ECU (metal box, approx 7" x 4" x 2" with a couple of multi-pin plugs in the right-hand side as you view it from the passenger seat/footwell).

The ECU does not need to be removed (but it is easier to get to the CO pot if you do) - to remove it, loosen the 2 x 10mm bolts at the bottom, then ease it forward (towards you) out of its frame.

The actual CO pot is a blue rectangular thing secured to the ECU frame by one of the phillips screws which holds the frame to the dashboard. It is about 2" x 1" x 1/2" and had a plug on one end which has 3(?) wires going into the loom.

On the pot is a small slotted screw which is the adjustment.

There are no 'end stops' on the screw, so it will keep on turning, past where the movement makes any diffence to the settings.

There are about 20 full turns (IIRC) of adjustment in the pot, so a small movement may make little difference. (just remember to count how many turns you have made so it can be put back as it was if you need to!)

Personally, i found it easiest to remove the pot from the frame, adjust it, and then re-fix it again, but if you have very dextrous fingers, I suppose it is possible to do it all in situ without moving the ECU.

I used a Gunsons Gastester digital, which is straightforward to use, but takes about 10 minutes to 'warm up' before you can do any adjusting - just the right amount of time to check/re-set the base timing and engine idle speeds :D .

Once it has warmed up, and is calibrated, the readings are very accurate. The box says + or - 0.5% CO, but i did mine just before taking it to the MOT garage, and set it to 2%, their (calibrated) machine says it was 2.1%.

HI

Thanks for all the help. I think I will let it go through the mot and see there the levels are.

I am off on holiday and will sort out the retest and adjustment when I get back at the end of August if it is needed.

Geoff thanks for the offer I may take you up on it after the test.

If you fitted the same version of mountain chip as the stock chip you had before (i.e. a 9929 mountain chip to replace a stock 9929, a 9930 mountain to replace a 9930, etc.) then you will have identical emissions in an MOT as before the upgrade. The chip does NOT influence mixture except for the V5 which makes it a little leaner to get more power and then only at high boost not at idle. Whoever told you might have trouble in an emissions test as a result of fitting a chip was talking out of the wrong orifice.

YIPEEE PASSED the MOT (JUST)

CO2 was high but test done with a bit of right foot  came in at 3.3% cut off 3.5%

Pressure off for another year

Now I can focus on the rear lights when I get back from holiday and hopefully have it ready for the 60th.
