CAS/Charlie's fix

Just had great success with Charlie's CAS fix.

Thought that a new set of plug leads had finally fixed the problem that had caused my engine light to appear intermittently. Sadly not, after a week or so of much improved performance the light was back on and my Elan was kangarooing down the road. Sure enough error code 41 indicated the CAS. Found Charlies fix and decided to give it a go. It all looked quite daunting really but in practice it was pretty straight forward thanks to Charlies write up. I was hoping that it wasnt all going to be for nothing though as I couldnt see any dry joints even with a magnifying glass. The hardest part for most will probably be soldering the contacts, but I had no difficulty with this at all having some experience in this area. Best of all when I started the car and took it for a spin, alleluia!! no kangaroo's and no engine warning light.

I had to buy some small sockets which cost me £11.99 but that was still an £80 +labour saving.

If your getting error code 41 and similar symptoms Id deffinately give this fix a go, as Charlie says, just take your time and practice your soldering first.

I had the same problem, but fixed it using the new design of HES available from Lotus parts sale for about £18. See write-up here.

I checked with Lotus on this part John and the price was £90++. If I could buy one for £18 Id probably do that to have one just in case. I know there is a Lotus parts sale website somewhere, I bought hub caps from there but cant for the life of me remember where it is. As much as I enjoyed fixing the old one, a replacement is probably the best option, especially if you dont own a soldering iron.

I had problems with my CAS which left me with lots of symptoms but no fault code.

I begin to think that the CAS may lie undiagnosed at the root of many of our problems with the Elan.

My CAS was actually damaged, but even minor bearing wear seems to be a big source of problems.

It's been said before but is worth repeating. If your Elan is not running well then the very first thing to check if the cause is not obvious is the the base timing (16 deg BTDC). Even if it is running well then it is still worth checking, you will be suprised how far off it might be and how much difference setting it correctly will make.

There is an assumption in the service schedule that once set this will not deviate and therefore none of the service schedules require it to be checked. Experience shows that it does drift off with time and needs checking and resetting. If the CAS is on the way out you will find it difficult to set the base timing with a timing gun because the signal will be bouncing all over the place (it's bad enough as it is because it's a wasted spark ignition system). The usual suspect is the Hall effect sensor, charlies fix or the replacement part from Lotus will fix that easily enough, occasionally it's something a little more drastic as in Jacko's case.

Sorry to be picky but I'm a little confused here.

The wiki page speaks about part A100E0102S which you can get from SJS for £65. This part number isn't on the Lotus sales list, the only thing that comes close is A100E6570L (****HONEYWELL HALL SENSOR(F/W)) which is £12.77.

Can somebody shed some light on this ?

Dunno where the picture in the wiki came from. The words are mine. What you want is
Elan M100 A100E6570L ****HONEYWELL HALL SENSOR(F/W) 969 N/A 12.77

They've got even cheaper since I bought mine at £18. Now they're only £12.77+VAT (say £14.69 these days). Absolute bargain. Better hurry though, they've only 969 left. When they first restocked with the new type, they had a couple of thousand. (Mind you that was a couple of years ago.)

£12.99 huh! Amazing that when I called my local Lotus dealership they quoted my £90+ just for the part and said they knew nothing about any sale price.

Anyway it was quite satisfying doing the fix and if the part is still available then I think I'll order one to be on the safe side.

However when I looked at the list of sale parts I couldnt see anything which fitted the description.

One of these days I'll figure out how to get a picture of my Elan on this site.

I have the silicone off on my sensor and I'm guessing that you just add some solder to the
terminals? Maybe but some wires across them? then re-silicone it.

As for buying a new sensor in the US. I checked Ebay and RockAuto but don't see one for sale.
