Hi just got my first Elan , it is ticking over at about 1250rpm , is this normal and if not can it be adjusted thanks

No ! Far too fast. You should be looking at setting ~950 rpm in service mode

1250 rpm just after starting going to 950 warm.
check for detached vac pipes.

It's used to make adjustments. You connect the 2 wires in the ALDL plug to obtain service mode. As the Lotus special tool is unobtainable, a paperclip will do.

Suggest you download the workshop manuals and have a browse, and also have a read of the wikiLEC. Plenty written up on there.

Good luck with your project though. If you can't find answers in the Manuals or wikiLEC, still don't be afraid to ask. Don't ask don't get!

Service mode is when you short out pins A and B on the ALDL plug located behind the glove box. Same as if you were doing a "paperclip" diagnostics check. So, get a paperclip, make a U shape and insert in pin A and B (black and white wires from memory)

Also gave a look here http://wikilec.com/view/Check_Engine_Light_(CEL) there is a schematic showing the ALDL plug and the correct pins to short out.

You may as well try looking to see if there are any error codes stored after or before you change your idle adjustment
