Fault code 41 ...

I have had my Elan for about 3 weeks now and occassionally the check engine light comes on pretty randomly and then goes off after about 5 minutes. Does anyone have any idea what it could be or whether there is something that may be triggering it off? As I said it happens occassionally and doesnt seem to point to a problem as the car runs perfect as expected?

Where is the ECU and does that link mean that by simply using a paper clip between the two connectors that the ECU will flash the fault code? Has anyone taken a picture of doing this?

It isn't the ECU you plug the paper clip into, it is the connector behind the glove box - just pull the glove box out and then you should find the connector plugged into a dummy socket. It is easy !

OOOOO clever idea indeed ... and the fault code should still flash even if it isn't present on the dash at that very moment as like I said it only happens every now and again ...

I have watched the Elan Scan video but in my S2 I cant seem to locate how to drop down the dash section if you get what I mean ...

drop the dash!!!

You just need to open the glove box, then look inside and you will see a stop bracket. Move the stop past the bracket and the glove box will open further (dropping all the contents onto the floor!).

You will then see the blue plug plugged into the docking receptor.

On the S2 the connector is normally on the bulkhead, passenger footwell, closer to the centre console side than the door.

Look at about the level of the glovebox hinge and you should see a 3(?) wire connector that plugs into a socket, but the socket goes nowhere (it's just a holder). This is the ALDL connector.

Found the connector and bridged the white and black (A and B) sockets but nothing happens when I turn on the ignition? Im at a loss ...

I can only think you have the wrong ones shorted together... indeed I think on mine one is black and the other white/black..... just a thought

After getting the paperclip method to work it is displaying a 41 fault code which is the Cam Angle Sensor (Hall Effect Sensor) -- see CAS write-up? Can anyone tell me the importance of this sensor and how it may be causing the fault code. The car is still under warranty from Paul Mattys but its a good 60 miles there and another 60 back so id like to get as much info as I can before I go up to him?

Its ok ... my Clifford alarm engages the immobiliser if the car isn't started within 30seconds of turning off the elarm ... I have to press the disarm button with the key in the ignition and once I did that the diagnostic mode started and showed fault code 41 ...

It's a common failing. The ECU uses it to determine when to inject fuel and ignite it, so it is very important.

The HES is only £20 from Lotus Aftersales and the write up is here.

YES SIR ... lol

I will get in contact with Paul then and arrange to let them replace it. Is the car still useable though as the engine light only comes on every now and again ... can sometimes go for a week without seeing it come on.
