Injector cleaning

Has anyone had there fuel injectors cleaned using ultrasonic technique and then the relevant flow test? If so - how much did it cost for all 4 injectors? I only ask as SJ's is asking £150 per injector plus vat!!!

I had a set done a few years ago - I used theseguys.

They provided a 'before' and 'after' flow comparison for each unit, and there was a significant improvement in balance & flow.

However, at £58.50 for a set of four, there may be other options available.

Rock Auto had some for sale (Ultrapower MFI31) for £17.41 each, but I can't comment on the exact flow rate suitability as they are listed for multiple vehicles, they include the Isuzu Impulse N/A & Turbo with the same part number, but Lotus give them different part numbers, as I believe the Turbo should have a slightly higher maximum flow - but maybe not enough to really worry about????

Anyone recall the differences and required rates?

Thanks for the quick response

I have looked on the rock auto site and as you said the injector part number MF131 is the correct injector. I found it listed under:- 1991 ISUZU IMPULSE 1.6L L4 TURBOCHARGED. Having found that, I am guessing that the flow rate of the injector will suit the Elan.

I will also contact the other guys you gave me the link to see if the price has changed at all.

Hi Grahame,

Having dug through old paperwork and a few other posts on here, it appears that the 'stock' injector for the N/A has a flow rate of 320cc, and the Turbo has a rate of 325cc.

They are so close to make little difference, I would suggest - especially as the receipt for my old ones (when they were cleaned) shows that the 'before' rates varied between 302 and 316, and the 'after' rates were all at 323 (plus or minus 1).

Others have suggested that RC Engineering do a good replacement, but cost $88.75 each.

I went for the 'cleaning' option based on quick turnaround - but if there is any doubt as to the condition of the actual electronic bits, then cleaning won't help, and it would be better to replace as a complete set.

It would be a false economy to have a set cleaned and then a while down the line one fails electronically, and you need to replace either just one, or a complete set.

As ever, the choice is yours

From your last post there doesn't really seem to be a choice at all.... Just get new ones - simple common sense!!!

I thought ( from reading loads of threads on the subject ) that the RC injectors were "uprated" so you could/can run higher boost! - probably wrong! I'm still a newbie.

Unfortunately for me the old saying "don't fix it if it is not broken" does not apply to me, I like things to be "just so"

The RC are often referred to as 'uprated' purely because they do a range of flow rates over (and under!) that required for the Elan - if you have the electronic brain and additional sensors tweeked, it can be beneficial to use extra fuel to gain the extra HP, or to keep it all a bit cooler under boost by running a bit rich - hence people fit the 'uprated' 370cc or 440cc injectors (or whatever they need!).

It is accepted 'wisdom' that anything is possible if you throw enough money, time and parts at the car, but to keep it 'standard' there are still some tweeks possible.

Notably, the Everest chip will up the boost to 0.96 bar, and increase the fuelling - but to go beyond that needs more fuel, so bigger injectors, after that the turbo becomes the limiting factor (and once you go over 1bar boost, the MAP sensor), etc etc etc

I have since been informed that they are th wrong part number and are not suited to the Elan.

If anyone reads this please do NOT order these injectors!

Oh well - you live and learn (I'll put it down to a classic school boy error of being to hasty!)

The affordable replacement injectors were MFI559 (MFI 559) but they are obsolete now.

Just about everyone has a listing on Rock Auto and elsewhere for MFI31(that is MFI 31, not MF 131) but they do clarify them as being for the non all wheel drive or Except 4 WHEEL/ALL WHEEL DRIVE which was the car with the turbo engine.

The Standard Motor Products FJ559 is the correct part, but much more expensive.

Some more information:

The Isuzu part number for the injector is 8170866110

The GM part number for the injector is 17086611

It appears the Boschtech number for the injector is MP3082

These appear to be Boschtech REBUILT, not new.
http://www.injectorwarehouse.com lists them at $32.75 each if purchased in lots of 4 with no core return. I would suggest you verify they exist as rebuildable cores are hard to find.

The Standard Motor Parts number is FJ559 Rock Auto has one left at the liquidation price of $32.79 but they also list Regular Inventory as $52.79 EACH!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261948969987 lists a set of 4 FJ559 but he is shipping FJ31 injectors NOT FJ559 We know this because the last set received had 13 ohm injectors not the correct 2 ohm version

Thanks for supplying me this information. I will investigate / search both the ISUZU and GM part numbers - I guess they should both tie up with the FJ559 number somewhere (please correct if I am wrong).

I am a bit dubious about using eBay to order them know having heard of listing being incorrect.

Has anyone used / purchased from CAR PARTS KING.COM? They have the STANDARD IGNITION fuel injector part# FJ559 listed at $155.16 each but, the fitment guide lists IMPULSE, sub model - all! I am a little alarmed as to why they have said "all". If the FJ559 is "the" injector for the impulse turbo / lotus Elan why not list the injector to be turbo specific?

If anyone can shed a little light on this I would be very appreciative.

P.s being that they are 155 bucks a piece would it be worth considering SJ SPORTSCARS injectors as they are listed at £150 plus vat?

I have new injectors fitted to my SE from this supplier, I've had them installed for a year or so and seem to be working fine.

I notice the listing quotes 310 - 315cc/min rather than the 320 -325cc/min mentioned earlier in this thread. The impedance looks to be correct though.

With shipping and duty you'll end up paying $232US which is around £152 right now.

Just a thought.

The FJ559 is for the Turbo Impulse, FJ31 is for the NA version. Why would anyone want to pay $150.00+ EACH when there are still some around for $50.00 each?

These are the same as the MFI559 which have worked well for many M100s.

Depends why they die. If they get blocked - Yes, probably; if they fail electrically - No.

Also depends what petrol you use as to whether it's necessary. Personally I now always use Shell V-Power Nitro + 'super' Unleaded as it contains cleaning agents / detergents that should prevent blockage.
If I used supermarket super unleaded, which is cheap because it doesn't have all the additives, I would probably think about putting some STP Fuel Injector Cleaner in the fuel tank from time to time.

Rock Auto uses a drop down choice menu and shows the lowest price injector first. If you click on the down "v" on the right side, you can choose the other 3 injectors to make a set.
