Ignition Switch Replacement

Postby CallMeLegend » Thu 11.06.2020, 13:31

Been looking through the service manuals but can't find any info on how to replace the ignition switch.

Any pointers greatly received.

Remove the cowl
you might need to unclip the stalk for access.
it is held in place by a screw unscrew unplug replace.

Ah, way simpler than I expected then! I expected to have to remove half the engine or something equally as daft!

Does this look like the correct switch?

If you meant to ask if that was the ignition switch, then, yes it is.

If you look at the non connection end, you will see that the slot for the lock portion to rotate the contacts is buggered.

That is what is causing the sticky nature of the switch.

I will look at one of the new switches I have and try to confirm the pins are in the same place.

This is the replacement part, it's not even been fitted yet!!! I'm not 100% sure it's the correct part however.

Sorry, it looks to be used.

The area around where the lock cylinder connects to the switch still looks to be damaged.

This is a brand new one out of the box...
IGN Switch-1.jpg

I tried to get a straight on shot of the tumbler connection point. In person, it is a defined key shaped area.

IGN Switch-2.jpg

The connections end seems to be the same.

MG's used a similar type switch after 1971 and the key shaped area would heat up and allow the tumbler connection to not fit correctly. It actually grew larger and the propeller shaped connector would rotate further and it would stick in the "on" position.

I would suggest that you replace the relay first since you found it worked occasionally better when you slammed it on a hard surface.

BTW, Rock Auto has it listed under 1991 Pontiac LeMans 1.6L Turbo under part number WVE 1S6210 or LS589

New over here they are around 18 quid. but you should be able to source one in the UK.

SJs have it as part# A082H6460H and show it at £8.43

Similar switch but I think ours has a tail soldered on and a plug somewhere on the column.

I suppose you could solder the lead on to the blades.

A few things:
A082… suggests it was first used on the Esprit.
SJS describe A082H6460H as "Only for models with SIR. (Air bag)".
DeRoure lists A082H4046F for LHD with airbag (Non airbag are all A100 or B100 so first used on the Elan) and the switch part of the assembly in the SJ picture looks very much like A082H6460H.
Although mine's an S2, I'm pretty sure it's got a pigtail with a 4 pin connector.
DeRoure lists A100H6022F (and B100H6022H from VIN R6001) for RHD non airbag models.
I found the following picture of A100H6022F on the interwibble.
SJS lists both A100H6022F and B100H6022H but I'd sit down before you look at the price if your VIN is after R6001 or hope that you can fit your spare.

He just needs the switch not the lock assembly.
The S2 has a pigtail but my UK column just has spades.

Have you removed your original switch from the ignition housing?
Where did you get the switch you posted?

Yes, it's not cheap is it, the one I saw on SJS had a tail too.

He just needs the switch not the lock assembly.

A long time ago, Lotus sent me an odd lock assembly that I think has a pigtail. It was completely different from the US version. I will look for it later today and send pictures.

I was under the impression that the S2 has a pigtail but my UK SE column just has spades.

Not yet no, the car is 65miles away!!!

The original switch I posted came with the car in a box with some (a lot) paperwork

I believe the FED version is the same basic switch but has an extra connector for one of the SAFETY components - maybe the airbag feed?

I will be in the shop later and will dig out the ignition switch assembly from the UK car.

Just for S&G, what are the wire colors going to the UK SE switch?

Yes, but if the new spare that Stevo bought shows signs of being used then presumably it does not fit.

But the picture I posted of an SE barrel and switch A100H6022F has a pigtail.

Both versions use the SAME lock cylinder and housing (#60), so as long as the connections needed are there, the US version should work.

There should be a Brown wire (connection from Battery), a white wire (feed to ignition and other items that are on when the key is in the ignition position)
A starter feed wire - probably white/red. Those are harness connections not coming out of the switch.

Lots of conjecture about pigtails, spades, pin-outs and original market for the various items.....

...... but when mine was knackered (in fact, it was only a bit sticky - but I wanted a spare key and getting a complete assembly was cheaper than getting one cut!) I just bought one for a Vauxhall Nova which arrived with 3 keys (1 with a built-in LED torch) and bolted it on the car.... it all plugged in, but it was different to my old one in 1 particular way.....

....it had an 'accessory' position on the key so you can use the radio without having the ignition on (much like every other car out there!) *but I had to change 1 wire over to use this advanced feature.

I did however remember a simple fact from the 1990's - all self-respecting ram-raiding car thieves carried a 'Vauxhall black box' in their pocket {the actual switch bit we are all talking about} - they were all sufficiently interchangable to be able to hot-wire any car that they had snapped the ignition barrel off of with their 12" scaffold tube!
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Looks like the switches also have extra spades on them, pairs rather than single spades
