Elan running full rich- need help

New poster, long time lurker.
My 49k fed. Elan is DOA. It has been for a year, with off and on attempts to correct the problem.
Symptoms:Car starts but seems to be running on 2-3 cylinders, in fact running on all 4 but so much fuel it is choking. Can smell fuel at tailpipe. plugs are all wet.
Will run for short time and stumble to a quick death.
When temps are cooler, i.e. morning or last fall it would run longer, until eng warmed up, then it would die.
Attack plan: No CEL at all, I tried paperclip with no codes showing. We recently tried Elanscan, but are getting no echo, so checking wiring, com port etc to see if we can eliminate any issues there.
I have replaced a few parts, some i knew would not fix but i did just because i could. 1st being coolant temp sensor because that seemed logical trouble area. Also new wires, plugs, coils, map sensor. Did not touch ign module, ECU.
Will try to borrow another ES cable and work on it some more soon, really miss my car.

Hello!

Although my Elan is a non-turbo, it was exhibiting similar symptoms to the ones you describe. Eventually i replaced the ECU with a secondhand unit (thanks again Enright), and that cured the problems. As turbo ECU`s are easier to come by than N/A`s it maybe worth swapping yours with a known good one.

yes, getting a scan of the car before running and during could help a lot!

I was thinking Coolant Temp Sensor by what yo said -- did you replace it and is it working right now. Could still be an electrical/connector problem even with a new sensor? If it is CTS then it will be OBVIOUS on ElanScan too!

I assume plugs are good, leads are good, and spark is to all cylinders?
