Hunting

Been getting a intermittent problem with the engine light coming on and going off!
Now and again my engine seems to be hunting I say this because the revs are going up and down when stationary between 1000 and 2000 +- 500 and some times decides to cut out all together! Made me look like a right plonker the other week when it stalled at a busy 6 way road junction and the battery was flat! lol ended up pushing it across lights on my own and jumping in quickley slipping the clutch in 2nd, made it to Halfords and got a new batt asap! few.!
Also now and again while driving the car starts to shudder as if it is missing a spark and running on 3 for 1or 2 secs noticed it does it more frequent when accelerating on motorway, thought it was having a heart attack but then smoothes out and runs perfectly again! Anyone got any ideas what this can be, think of changing the spark plugs but still that would not explain the hunting !

I had the same if not similar problem.It was the hal effect sensor that needed replaced.
The first thing is to check for fault codes using elan scan or paperclip test.

Spot on. I scanned it the other day, and it flagged errors with CAS, O2 and EST monitor. Are all 3 likely to be a fault or could a faulty CAS be responsible for all 3?

I had codes 41,42 and 54 if i remember correctly. Replacing the hal sensor sorted all three.
Chances are all three are related.The faulty hal sensor probably affecting the timing which in turn leading to the fuel not burning correct.That's probably why the oxygen sensor fault code is stored.
Other possible reasons are a bad earth and the spark plugs/leads.
I would replace the hal sensor first and see if this cures the other two codes.
I have a sneaky feeling it will but don't hold me to that!

Great!. I meant CO, not O2 sensor anyway, so they are the 3 errors which are being flagged.
Hopefully, sorting the CAS will work this time too. Once this is done, there is a small matter of fitting and Everest chip
