my car runs to cold , new stat fitted from halfords made it a little warmer
but still to rich, my co reading is 5.60, my co2 is 12.2, i think its running double what it should,
How does the ecu alter the mixture setting without an oxygen sensor
the cars doing crap miles to the gallon as well,
if i leave it running for half an houre the car runs to mid way on gauge, but as soonnas i drive it down she goes, any ideas as to keep the thing warm

Whippit,

When you leave the car to warm up, does the fans eventually kick in? If so (as they should at some point) what does the temp. gauge show at that moment? Gauges can be unreliable so you might be thinking you're running cold but actually you may not so; temperature may have nothing to do with the running rich thing. When you drive it, to which mark does it cool down to? The normal temp. is the 1/4 mark on the gauge. If it's lower than that either you're new thermostat is faulty or the gauge.

Elanscan will let you see what temperature value ECU is getting.

Hope I sounded logical. I don't know about the mixture setting though...

Good night,

Do the paperclip test first to see if there are any fault codes stored.
Then check your base timing and correct it.
After that the most likely cause is your Coolant Temp Sensor packing in.
Temperature sounds about normal on the gauge.

Don't forget to report your results back.

The car is running on the cool side, heaters not upto much, when i fitted new stat it ran a little warmer but seems to have cooled off , the fans cycle correct on the gauge, slightly obove half when kick in, then down to half cut out, when taken out for a run the gauge hardly moves above bottom mark, i guess a scan is the only way to check what going on,

Normal running temp is 1/4 on the gauge.
Are you going to Donny? Excellent opportunity to get a log from Elanscan.....find out what's really going on in there. I'll try to remember to take Elanscan with me (& I am sure Smiff the Mod will too  )
Enright could never get decent economy & never found out why. Fitted an O2 sensor & that fixed it.

So there's hope.

Im going to donny sat morn, i was wondering about the oxy sensor, it would cause the poor economy, the rich smell, but wouldn;t stop the cold running though ???, surely the stat wouldnt have gone down again, or would it be the temp sender? the fans are correct , i guess the ecu reads the air temp the water temp to set the base start up mixture, water temp rises, mixture adjusted , oxy sensor gives real time readings to ecu for adjustment, i guess i'm missing something, i'll have to ask niclely if someone would be so kind as to run a scan for me, bloody car,,,,,

There are two temp senders next to each other on the engine; from memory (which ain't what it was) they a) feed the ECU, and b) feed the dash guage and operate the fans switch.

When my ECU sender packed up, the car effectively ran at 'full choke' all the time. Shortly after replacing it, the head gasket failed.
Co-incidence? Somehow, I doubt it.

If fuel consumption suddenly takes a dive (& exhaust popping & banging gets serious) a stitch in time may save a small fortune. (Or, if you can't resist having the head gas-flowed properly, once it's off - a large one  )

check the coolant temp sensor on ElanScan -- it can go bad on the Elan and if so will soot up your exhaust and spark plugs . . .

I'll try the cts first, are they available still, ??? the care ran a treat going to donny though, it ran warmer and gave 35 mpg at slighty more than legal limit, i wonder if the cts kicked into gear, the temp sat at just under first mark all day, and it was cold day, its never ran that warm even on a long run befor, my exhaust still sooted up though,
