Hi Guys, my Lotus is having problems again, while driving normally it is fine but when you boost up it stutters (it is a bit like it is hitting the rev limiter) My local garage has checked the obvious including the CAS and he thinks it could be a faulty injector....But this is a guess??
Does anyone out there have some for sale so we can check this, or does anyone have any idea what it could be...
I have done an Elan scan and this throws up no error codes.
Please help
John

Yes he has changed the plugs and done a test on the electrics etc....He says that he thinks the injector is kicking back the fuel under load? When driving normally it is fine...It starts first time and ticks over fine..
cheers John

John,
Whereabouts are you? I've got some spare injectors you could try.
I'm in Leicestershire

Do the paperclip test to double check to see if it shows a error code, have you got a the new type HALL fitted in the CAS?

Hi Monty
no error codes at all just flashes 1...1/2 (12) constantly...Car runs absolutly fine until it is under heavy load (boost) then it stutters.
If i leave it a few days it doesn't do it from cold but once warm it plays up...Without boost or load it is fine.
Unsure what CAS is fitted as i only bought the car in June, none of the paperwork i have include a CAS so i assume it is the old one.
cheers

They're not specific to our car.
Here's a lotus Pt No A100E6574S Well expensive.
Someone will be along with the Isuzu Pt No.
This may help, Even thou it's an upgrade.

My wild guess would be an ignition coil rather than injectors.

He said he has tested the output of all of the electrics and they are fine...When the car is stoodstill and it is revved there is no spluttering...When it happens it isn't like a misfire more of a starvation of fuel...He said when the turbo kicks in it puts extra pressure on the injectors and one is breaking down under load pushing fuel back...I must admit i thought it was electrical and so did he until he drove it today...He said that the only thing it can be would be an injector??
The head gasket has been done recently so i assume the improved combustion has found a weak spot in the injector...Fingers crossed anyway

It sounds like classic boost creep/overboost/boost cut to me.
Is the timing properly adjusted? Is there any scatter? If so it is almost certainly the CAS.
How did your non specialist local garage rule out the CAS? In my experience a minor amount of play in the CAS can have a huge effect - and an effect which is VERY hard even for the real Elan specialists to correctly diagnose. Mine beat Steve Williams and Gerald at GST!
Otherwise leads/plugs/coilpacks.
What happens to the boost guage? What's it boosting to before the cut-out?

It boosts at just over 0.5 bar...when it happens the boost seems to instantly drop.....He has checked the timing again and says it is fine.....What is "scatter" is this where the CAS could be worn allowing a incorrect reading?

I have exactly the same problem with my car - it does feel more like fuel starvation than electrical. I have just replaced the fuel pump with a walbro 255 because that packed up completely, but I haven't taken it out on the road since (I only wanted to start it up so i could work on the brakes!) The brakes will be finished as soon as I get a moment and i'll let you know if the pump fixed the starvation problem. I seriously doubt it, as I think it is coincidence thatthe pump failed, but i'll give it a go.
Scott.
Do I buy another Elan or go for something older and different?

Garage called this afternoon.....NOT the injectors....exactly the same ......."BUGGER" It seems that once warm it plays up and it boosts normally when cole?
If the coil pack is the original could it expand once warm causing it to ark across under load? causing the problem.
Like i have said before the car starts first time works great for a few miles then plays up but then only under boost.
Getting desparate people i really don't know what it is...the garage is still playing but all of the time it is costing money...
Elan scan shows no problems and because whatever it is breaks down under load it is difficult to diagnose..
PLEASE HELP ME ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Just had a thought if work has been, does the battery need disconecting to clear the ECU...Could the injectors have been the problem and the ECU has stored the problem...Might be a dumb question but you never know?

The thing about Elan Scan is it will not detect an electrical problem in the ignition...There are no sensors...
A battery disconected will reset the ECU, (Remember to drive accordingly to reset the ECU)
Things I would check:-
Coils, leads, plugs, wastegate wiggle and slave in a serviceable ECU
What's your location fella?

Hi Specky, I live in Doncaster.....Could it be the main air intake pipe that has a hole in it?? This would explain why it does not do it hen cold but when hot...Or does it?
He is resetting the ECU and i am waiting for a response... He has changed the plugs, checked the leads which he says are nearly new and all read the same output, he has cleaned the connectors on the coil pack.
He has checked the timing at various different revs and said there is no scatter and it remained constant and perfectly timed...It isn't much as the car runs fine but it is exactly like boost creep when it hits boost...like the rev limiter coming in but not over revving.
I have a stainless exhaust on the car but it is the same bore as the old one and the downpipe has remained unchanged.
Could it be crap petrol?? Intermitant fuel pump problem...I still think it is electrical but then again it could be owt....

Shame about the location...

Not that it's Donny... It's just it miles away from me...
When the coils break down they're normally fine at low speed, sometimes the engine runs on two or sounds a bit lumpy...
But when you hit the loud button the coils can't cope it can feel like the cars stalling especially motorway driving...
When the waste jams it can have a smilar effect... one symtom is lack of power when boosting in fact it can lose power... this is not a common as the normal waste gate symptoms.

The garage has reset the ECU and it is the same...He has told me to go to Noble motor sport in Chesterfield as they can rolling road it and boost it up and check what it is. He said he has used them in the past and they are spot on???
Is the coil pack easy to replace?
cheers
