CEL Code 44

Yesterday evening I went out in the cold and damp in my Volvo. Lights on demister on... It hasn't seen regular use. I pulled up in a queue of traffic on a steep hill, the traffic lights changed and the que pulled away as did I, I put my foot down to keep up and it died. There was a helpful message about "engine system failure", and that I should take it in for a service - somewhat academic as it was the car equivalent of a blue screen. I put the hazards on and luckily everyone assumed that I was too lazy to park properly for the nearby Chinese. Eventually it started and I drove the 3/4 mile home. Reminds me of driving an old mini.

I jumped in the lotus, the low fuel light came on, I grabbed a Jerry can and was on my. way. A short way into my short journey I started to get a missfire on acceleration. My immediate though was coil packs and damp weather, so I was gentle with the throttle. A short while later the CEL came on and then went off again it did this several times I put it down to the ongoing knock sensor issue.

I drove the car today and it was soon apparent that the missfire was not ignition related as I could sometimes accelerate hard through the rev range.

I did the paper clip test and got 43 knock sensor and 44 lean mixture. Thinking about it could also get the missfire although reduced when the CEL was lit which might suggest fuel starvation.

So does anyone have experience of code 44?

My initial thought is that you have a faulty or blocked injector.

How old was the fuel in the Jerry can?

I presume you're running closed loop (as how else would the ECU know it's lean) in which case you could look at the O2 sensor output in ES.

rip could be injectors - it's that sort of missfire. The tickover is fine though so not sure how to check them. Also when it works it will rev all the way.

Geoff, S2 but not the original O2 sensor. I have suspected it in the past but it checked out OK - so I have a new one on hand.

The fuel is a couple of weeks old, it was low so could be crud related - listening this evening the fuel pump sounds rather subdued.

So having messed around for a couple of hours trying to get a scan - Switched back to old pc and it was fine.

So here is the scan which I now don't have time to look at. It was fine until the hard acceleration in 4th and the acceleration in 3rd just before I turned around.
1, I know about the knock sensor
2. it occurred to me that the stored codes could have been from when I was working on it over the summer - will clear them for the next scan!
