Exhaust rich smell

Postby pte123 » Sun 01.11.2026, 19:03

Hi All,

Just looking for some help troubleshooting. The exhaust is very sooty and it smells really rich. Does anyone have any thoughts on where I should start with troubleshooting?

I do have access to Elanscan. The idle seems okay and there's no check engine light on the dash.

Much appreciated! Phil

My first thought is to see what Elanscan is saying the coolant temperature is.......

...... this sounds like a typical 'overfueling' situation, which is often brought about by the ECU thinking that the car is running much colder than it actually is, so throws extra petrol into the system.

If it is giving a low reading, the CTS probably needs changing, which is a fairly quick and easy thing to do, with aftermarket parts which can be purchased cheaply (under £20).

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?
