S2 without the main catalyst converter, also ECU questions

Postby kmckmc » Thu 05.10.2006, 09:45

Hi,

I just realized that my Elan M100 S2's main catalyst converter was taken off by the previous owner. However, my S2 still pass the local Taiwan emission test. Please note that my S2 still has oxygen sensor installed.

I was wondering if I can use Elan M100 SE (Turbo without catalyst) ECU on my S2 now? What would happen to it? You see, there is some slight glitch in my current S2 ECU. I suppose by swapping a different ECU, the glitch might go away. And yes, I can get a SE (UK Spec) ECU relatively cheap.
So, I am willing to try.

Please advise.

Regards,
Elan M100 S2

Michael,

The S2 meets most emission regulations even if the main cat is removed as the pre-cat is still in place and seems to be sufficient by itself. Many of us no longer have main cats!

The ECU is the same for all turbo Elans and probably the NA too. The only difference is the MEMCAL which fits into the socket on the ECU board. If you change the ECU for an SE variant, then use your S2 MEMCAL and everything should be OK (unless your MEMCAL is broken of course).

BTW, how much can you get an ECU for?
