Seat Belts

Postby Mr B » Tue 20.02.2007, 10:40

I've had a trawl through the forums but can't find out (Or missed) where the Elan seat belts come from - anyone know?

My drivers one spring has gone and now actually seems locked - are they easy to remove?

Cheers

Andy,
I've never seen a solution for this one. If you find out, post it and tell BigErch whose drivers belt is as you describe.

Good luck.

Not a great deal of help I know, but I tried to source a new seatbelt 3-4 years ago when mine locked up with damp during the winter. I tried all the usual suspects - SJS, Kelvedon, Paul Matty, Christopher Neal, etc but none had any stock and SJS who seem to be the most reliable source of bits said they had no idea when Lotus may restock them, if ever. I was left with the advice of trying to modify a universal belt to fit.

Once the car dried out the belt unlocked itself. Since then I've been fortunate to have built a house and made sure the garage was of sufficient size to take two cars plus junk so it never sits outside now.

However, the passenger seat belt doesn't fully recoil so if anybody has any updated info on seat belt availability I'll be interested as well. :?

Whilst ordering a few other bits from SJs I checked the status of the seatbelts. Steve confirmed that we can forget Lotus but he now stocks a Universal belt (Securon) which should fit the Elan with a slight modification to the mounting (apparently an issue with one or two mounting holes). He has never fitted one himself but has apparently sold quite a few for the Elan so people seem to fit them OK. Price was £39 + VAT. I've bought one to try (won't attempt pre-Donington though in case it gets complicated).

I hope so too...!!

Out of interest, I also noticed on a seat-belt web-site that the Elan seat-belt code was the same as for the Elise. I have about 4 sets of Elise belts lying around the garage!

On the same subject, does anyone have any simple instructions for how to access and remove the Elan seat-belts - is it the typical screws hidden in the carpet?

No problem (unlike I suspect the seat belt) - It will get me one post closer to Tinkerer. Don't watch this thread with too much trepidation though, the seat belt job is half way down the list of priorities, sorting the brakes being at the top but I'm hoping the contents of a little box in my garage with Pagid blue written on it may help. The current Greenstuff might as well be made from grass for all the use they are when cold.

Ah! I found them some time ago but was a bit put off by the 2 point belt (for the rear seats?!) and the Lambo doors! I may be unduly cynical but I strongly suspect they are a generic item which have got many car types listed against them to generate hits from search engines. That's not to say they won't work however.

Good luck with the searches Dave, as it seems to be one area where we've hit a blank in finding an alternative and a few (including me) have minor problems.

Good man Dave.

Someone suggested they may have been off a Nissan so I asked a contact to check at the MackemFactory but no joy!

All Mackem Nissans use unique buckles.
The previous report refered to a USA model but even then it needed slight modification  to fit.
Only my thoughts but I feel that OE's make them all slightly different to stop you fitting lets say a Micra belt to an Aston Martin. It might click in place with a bit of fettling but will it hold in a head on collision?
Another thing to bear in mind is the orientation of the anchor. Most are for longitudinal mounting but ours is transverse so the locking mech. may be compromised

Found this in my inbox from Mark last year, in case it helps:

the seat buckle find was right under my nose. I needed a new buckle and went to several wrecking yards in the area in search of something that would fit, but no luck. afer several weeks of searching, one day I got into my Infiniti I30 and for whatever reason, actually looked at the seat buckle instead of just jamming the belt into it. Voila! - it looked the same as the Elan, and that was that.
