B post caps

Postby antelope » Fri 23.07.2010, 15:47

Mine are both missing. Is there a source of these? Or is it a case of hoping for second hand ones? Thanks.

Can be got from S J Sportscars, not cheap, and they're reproductions, and require painting. But fit fine, so long as you have the later type of hinge.

I have an S2 hood on my SE, does this mean I have the later hinges?

No! The later type have a long hinge and you can hardly see the spring, the early type have a different type of hinge and 2 very visable springs:

The top of the B post trim is different to fit early or late types. The caps that S J's sell are the later type, and not supplied with hinges, which are no longer available, though I'm sure something could be sorted, but they have to be spring assisted to close them else the hood mechanism will catch on them and as I found out, rip them off.

I just seem to have a hole, with two slightly knackered screw holes along one edge...perhaps this was where the hinge was screwed? None of it looks very strong. I'm suspecting this is a prob for a lot of people....am I right?

If your holes are facing the back of the seats, then that's the early type, if the holes are on the top, the later type. I don't have experience with the early type, but I'm sure a bit of of a head scratch and maybe a small bracket made up will get a set of the later type caps fitted to the earlier B post trim, but will require suitable hinges and springs etc.

As I said, the later type are available from SJ Sportscars:

Part numbers are SJ100B0018 for R/H and SJ100B0019 for L/H, priced at £26 each +VAT. I've not checked if they're actually still available though, I got one about 9 months ago.

Just checked with Steve at SJ's, these are still very much available, not a stock item as they're made to order, so a lead time of a week or 2.
