Red Mist on Gauges

Postby Specky » Tue 04.04.2006, 21:00

After a cold wet winter in the garage I just put the old girl on the road ..

And this is where the problem lies. I have condensation in all three small centre Gauges and this is really annoying especially when driving at night, hence the red mist..

Are the gauges sealed units?

Is it possible to remove the glass from the gauges in situ?

Any advice gratefully received.. :smt115

The condensation will soon dissapear. It is due to a combination of cold weather and very little useage. There is nothing you should be doing about it. :D

Dave, i think this is quite normal in our climate, but if you really want to take them apart i know Monty has done this, so might be worth sending him a PM ?

I used to get this a bit on my old white elan, but cant say i get it on blacky, don't know if its anything to do with the fact she has a shower cape on ?. Pretty sure when you get her out in the fresh air it will soon go !

Dave,
see here http://www.lotuselancentral.com/lec/mistygauges.htm .

As with most things on the Elan, somebody on LEC has been there and done that; Monty probably even has the T-shirt available for purchase.

John, I'm following you around tonight - just done exhausts & mistygauges.htm and now here!

I've only had mine 3 weeks (so she's been in the garage every night) and my dials have just started misting up. Page 42 of my manual has a section on ventilation : "It is not recommended to store a wet car in a poorly ventilated garage. If good ventilation cannot be provided, storage outside on a hard standing or under a carport is preferred"

I don't plan to attack my dials just yet but I'd be interested to hear how you get on Dave.

The gauges aren`t design to be pulled apart, so i wouldn`t advise on pulling them apart just cause there a bit misty as the mist will only show it`s ugly head again. I`ve have a spare set of gauges and i`ve removed the dials (for paul.p to have lockwood make them up) i manage to chip the glass in one

If u do decide have a read of this:-

Hi

Borrow the Hairdryer from you wife/son/daughter.

Heat Glass to evaperate excess water inside. This soon clears mist caused by condensation.
