DashBoard Question

Postby Rob P » Mon 20.05.2013, 19:18

Just been to get a quotation for having my seats and door cards recovered and whilst I was there mentioned that the Dashboard has a few areas where the top layer appears to have lifted from the body of the dash looking like air bubbles, as such I asked if they would consider covering the dashboard and they gave a flat refusal :(

Has anyone else been down the route of covering the dash with leather or maybe even Alcantera?

Still would like to go down this route and will be searching for other Retrimmers in the North West of England to see if there are any accommodating souls out there, if anyone has any info on this subject I would be grateful

Thanks :D

Did you find out? I am looking to get all of the plastic dash / door cards, centre console covered but my re-trimmer has been informed there is an issue sticking anything to this plastic. Does anyone else have any information please?

Simon at Hoods Galore is going to do mine; hopefully in 2-3 weeks time if all goes to plan. He is going to cover it in leather.

He advised that you couldn't do vinyl, it would lift under heat from the sun.

If you contact him please do let him know its because I recommended you; he has been very good to/patient with me and I'd like him to know it was worth doing!

Cheers Jeemy

I would like to stick with the guy who did my seats and yes he also had concern about the sun but you can get treated leather for that - it was the sticking it down issue he had.. look forward to seeing your photos..

Its not been mentioned to me, but he hasn't seen it. He knows the cars as he obviously does hoods in galorious quantities for them.

I am relying on this to be able to deal with the bad fitment of the dash i.e. bring in some areas, and add bulk in others, to get it fitting properly to the fascia again. So I need the leather to be a tight and secure fit. I've discussed this with him too. Fingers crossed is all I can say for now!

Still negotiating with the guys who have given me a price for the seats and door cards, initially they didn't want to do the Dash, the guys are ex TVR fabricators so are happy to do the whole of a TVR which they were doing when I went to see them, I think they have concerns about taking the dash out.
However, one of the guys spoke to me at a recent car show and said he'd have a word and then dropped a message saying that they were in agreement to do the dash now, one problem I have is that the existing covering has lifted in the passenger area where the recessed area is and as such I really want to smooth this area off completely.
I really want to cover the dash area with Alcantera and have it double stitched, the seats and door cards would be primarily Leather but with some Alcantera to blend with the dash.
Need to pop over and have another chat with them, they have done work on M100's before so I'm hopeful they can do the business.

it might not be an issue then - my trimmer just had this caution - his mum was ex Lotus factory M100 trimmer and ran this business before him..

Re: DashBoard Question

If I was them I'd be rightly anxious about dismantling a customers dash on a 20 year old car with no prior knowledge.

In fact, taking the main dash out is really easy. Taking the fascia and dials out might be easier than I made it; technically if its all secure you can pull fascia, dials and all and just disconnect 3 harness connectors. I found the whole thing very stressful the first time and am not looking forward to the second. I hope on reinstallation its all worth it.....

I'd take the car up with the right tools and remove the dash outside for them; all you need is a mini socket set, a plastic pry tool and a little electric screwdriver for speed, plus allen keys for the steering wheel and some plastic bags to keep it all safe. Fight with the climate control rod before you go there! Maybe even check you can break all the bolts so they are easy to remove when you get there? Also the 5 vents are a bit fiddly but a stubby philips driver or a UJ on a screwdriver or ratchet will get you there.

I have literally 100+ cardboard boxes put aside, and I'm going to need every single one of them to rig up safe packaging for all of mine - I do hope that on its return Simon has better boxes to return the pristine bits; maybe I will need to invest in 3 big custom boxes for the dash & 2 seats........

Apparently Lotus spent more on the development of the Elan dash than the entire production line for the Excel (I hope I remember that right!!). Its big and floppy once removed, yet strangely resistant to bending back into shape. Having recently pulled most of my Audi dash to access and fix a broken cruise control switch the material looked very similar; its like expanding foam almost. I guess there are few things you can make a dash out of but Araldite seems to stick very well to it as does fibreglass so repairs are possible if there is any damage; its just changing the shape I'm finding hard.....

Re: DashBoard Question

Postby Elanlover » Sat 10.08.2013, 16:17

I've given this some thought myself and decided against leather covering for the dash and door panels for a few reasons. I'm concerned about the cost relative to how good a job can be done. There's a lot of ridges and bumps on the dash and that's going to take a lot of work to get the leather to sit tight and look nice over the long haul. Also, I don't think I would like the interior to be almost completely leather and the deep part of the dash is a real bit$h to clean so treating the leather properly to keep it looking good would be difficult. Just personal preference really. Also keep in mind that you'd likely need to do the centre console to make it look right. And then there's the plastic b post covers and rear bulkhead rail, the a post beams and header piece (currently all in grey leather). So, in my opinion, its going to take a lot of work, leather and money to do it in a way that actually looks nice, well thought out and somewhat stock. I'm thinking about approaching it in a different way (for what its worth)

I'm wondering if the dash and door panels can simply be vinyl dyed a different colour. I'm assuming the top coating of these pieces that lies over the foam is a vinyl rubber of some form and could be dyed any colour with a product like this. Obviously, you could do the centre console too (but I might be going in a different direction there with a custom centre console that's lower and uses an electronic handbrake instead of the manual one). The plastic rear rail and b post pieces could be dyed or painted with the appropriate product. That would leave the a post covers and top rail to be done in leather (a modest expense) along with any other pieces you want (I will do the centre console in leather).

Would you consider that route or are you sold on leather (which would no doubt look sumptuous if done well)?

Re: DashBoard Question

Postby Jeemy » Wed 21.08.2013, 21:25

I'm actually already prepped up with most of those pieces which are all also getting leather covered.

So roughly, I am covering the dash, centre console & compartment cover, back rail, B and A-pillar covers, sill covers, and top rail together with the door cards in dark brown leather.

Then seats, steering wheel, door card inserts and pockets, and gear/handbrake gaiter will be done in cognac leather.

So as far as I know, and I want the car back in front of me to do a final check, the entire interior will be all leather. The gear knob I have already has a small piece of light tan leather - and the handbrake I have has black vinyl - both of these will be sent to him and if he can, he will change the leather over on them. If he can't, well, the gear knob will look fine, and the handbrake can be replaced with something that the leather can be replaced on, or something already in a dark brown.

Basically I've got a price which covers me for so many hides - the offcuts from the dash should cover the long thin pieces and if worst comes to worst I either buy one more hide, or go for vinyl as you say on the back / low / less visible parts. I'd just have him recover in a matching vinyl if such a thing exists. He is picking the colour to match the cognac, by eye for me once the seats are done.

The problem with these vinyl dyes is getting them to stick. Ingrained dirt is hard to clean off without damaging the surface, and there are scuffs to think about.

I posted up a link to the VHT stuff before on a few forums and nobody came forward with first-hand experience, which is when I decided having been given the price on the leather dash as an example, to see if I could negotiate a fee that worked for every single piece.

I'm not saying there will not be flaws and problems with both methods - anything that isn't honed on a factory line with the option to discard seconds, is not going to be perfect. I've got some Autoglym (I think) Magic Sponges to have a go at removing some light scratches from a mini - and it was so bad on the seat backs, I ended up using 1800 > 2400 grit on the plastic which worked quite well. I think the magic sponges are either going to put a silicon coat over and/or have a very mild abrasive effect - a plastic/cellulose polishing compound of 00000 grade might also work to get the vinyl ready to take the VHT without showing up the old scuffs, marks and dirt.

I've also seen guys using dual orbital polishers with fine buffing pads direct onto vinyl and plastic trim.

My van is also in pieces right now at an electrical specialists being reloomed, all the old RAC gremlins need to come out and some new alarm, central locking, fuel sensors and rails are going in. The guy next door to him is a refinisher and although he wasn't about when I went up, the spark was telling me about an interior he was working on. The first thing he did was coat everything in a yellowish substance. I am guessing something between an etching primer and a PVA. This before painting the vinyl. I hope to find out what products these were on my next visit, as the dash and door cards are out on the van, I'm going to attempt to refinish them myself.

At the price I've worked out, I am sold on the leather for the Elan - bear in mind its the only material (as I am advised) that will do the dash, and so everything has to then match to it. While I'd originally planned to dye the remainder, I want to go for a dark brown and I'm not convinced a brown dye over the dark blue-grey that the Elan and LOTS (why?) of other cars have instead of black would end up looking anything but patchy or mismatched. Certainly if done by me.

So I'm going to have a pop at the van using this method, and leave the Elan to a professional! I'll certainly report back. It all depends just how this VHT works in terms of coverage. The claims on the site sound brilliant - can you build up coats? I'm going to go for dark grey and black.

Once its done, you are right, the leather needs to be fitted correctly (of which Simon seems confident) - and then it needs to be kept clean and not lift.

The former I am happy with - I will use Gtechniq C6 Matte Dash on all the leather and vinyl. This provides a degree of abrasion resistance together with dirt- and dust- repellent properties. I'm normally sceptic of such claims as a chemist, but their products have been nothing but astounding in their performance.

The lifting is going to be under UV. I plan to use a dash cover when its left out in the sunlight. Not something we are cursed with here in Scotland anyway, haha.

The final concern I have is what to do with the fascia panel. I've repaired it using fibreglass and that repair has held for 3 months, so I am happy to go forward.

I plan to take the attitude that its grunged up anyway - anything I do will be an improvement. So I plan to rub it down with about 800-1200 grit, and then 'paint' it with fibreglass. I'll hand-sand it until its pretty smooth, then coat it in a spray etch primer, then a 2-pack paint, probably a dark grey.

I hope it to end up like the plastic on an Audi dash - that kind of gloss veneer that can be dark grey, or fake wood, or what have you. If worst comes to the worst it will go back to black, or be plasti-dipped.

The plastidip tends to, and is designed to peel, as Henk-Jan has pointed out. This yellow compound prevents that and keys the plastidip to the substrate. So its a good candidate for a rubberised finish which would be moderately hard-wearing.

What colour are you actually doing the dashboard? If its black, I think 'other blacks' will work fine; and to a degree you can use matte/gloss polishing/treatment to line them up in terms of surface reflection.

"IF" I were to do it at all it would be black. Seems the standard choice and goes with just about anything. I'll be interested in seeing the final product when done!

I misread 'I will do the centre console in leather' as 'I will do the dash'. Still a bit braindead after working 140-hour weeks for the last month.

So why do the console in leather, but the rest not? Just cos of the complexity of the piece?

Surely if you are doing the rest as refurbed vinyl, the console would be better handled in the same manner?

Mostly for the reasons I stated above. I believe that by doing the centre console (a newly designed one that will eliminate the joint in the middle of the shift gaiter that never sits flush) it will look finished and not need the dash et al to be done also.

Can you clarify what you mean ref: the gaiter? I don't have my car in front of me for another 4-5 days yet and would be good to take a note of it so if possible, I can fix it - not that I have noticed it but I have only spent 400 miles total in the car before I stripped the interior all those moons ago…..

I don't know what the UK version of the centre console looks like (either the SE or S2) but on mine, the centre console stops in the middle of the shift gaiter where the dash then carries on and up to the fascia, etc. Like in this pic.

Thats absolutely how mine is, and not changeable for me unfortunately. So what are you going to do? Take away some of the dash and have this sitting over it, or vice versa?

I should note Woolies do some kind of push-on trim, and I have considered putting this right down the edge to tie it up together. This was before I found out the leather trim might be able to correct the edge curling. Will have to wait and see the finished product.

I build and trim kit cars and replica cars..and have retrimed my s2 centre console and back hood storage area in black leather hide...and it looks and smells great...the s2 centre console was poor quality thin plastic but with a bit of foam padding and leather makes all the difference..nice place to rest your arm now...did look at the dash and instrument binnacle but without good adhesion looks a bit daunting and could lift in UV light..
