No, not at all. The gearstick gaiter pulls out, its on a springy type thing and pulls out of the console, (take the knob off and pull the old one over the stick), the handbrake one, as i recall is similar.
Hope that helps.
Pete.

That is what I thought but seems to be some metal pin at the bottom holding it in. Different on S2s perhaps?

Possibly!
I can only speak for mine but if I were to decribe the spring, it is like a square metal pin running around the base just inside the console, you remove it by putting tension on it so it bends inwards allowing each corner of the gaiter to unclip. This could feel like the metal pin you describe?

Hi
Just taken centre consol off of my S2. The hand brake gaitor has spring clips holding it onto the consol except at the back where it has 2 rivits. So mine could not be taken off without removing the centre consol. If you push down on the edge of the gaitor where it goes into the centre consol you can push the spring clips off but you will still need to get under the consol to replace them even if you do not have the rivits.

On SE's the gear-lever gaiter will come out with just a little bit of a fiddle, but I wouldn't try the same with the handbrake gaiter - it would probably damage the surround on it.
I've always had to put the handbrake on full, remove the plastic grip, take out all the screws to remove the console, then slide the console off over the handbrake before removing the gaiter from the upturned console. Does that make sense?
