Door Sill Installation

Postby Elanlover » Sun 03.02.2008, 15:19

I'd like to hear from a few people about how they've installed their door sills (if you've ever removed or replaced them that is). Specifically, if you've used the plastic mounting strip.

I believe the way they are meant to be installed is to first install the white/clear mounting strip with the plastic rivets. Then the door sill gets installed over that with some adhesive or tape or whatever. has anyone simply installed the sills onto the frame without the use of the mounitng strips? If so, what was the result? Any gaps, leakes, etc.? Better with or without the strips?

I'd love to NOT use the strips but I'm not sure what the result will be. Any feedback or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks all!

Soooo...........no one's done this? By the way, I think these mounting strips may actually be black, not white.

Are you on about the plastic kick plates/sill covers?
If so, what mounting strips?
Mine are held in place with captive grommets.

Hi Sy, yes, that's exactly what I'm referring too. I replaced mine early last year with a set I picked up from the aftersales sale. The install involved first mounting a plastic strip with the gromets you'vr described. Then, the actual sill plates are afixed to these strips with either double sided tape or glue or whatever you want to use.

What I"m contemplating is simply glueing (or caulking) the sill plates directly to the frame. I suspect the sills would sit a bit lower but I'd be interested to hear from someone whose done just that and can comment on fit, appearance, water leaks etc. Thanks.

Ah, OK. I assumed my strips were always one piece (with grommets) - can't help you, I'm afraid.

Must admit, ive took a couple of these off, & also presumed they were one piece, perhaps they were bonded together on initial assembley at the factory ?

I replaced mine last year - the ones i took off (early type) appeared to be bonded to the bottom bit and had to be seperated with a sharp chisel and a brummy screwdriver.

I could then fit the bottom bit to the sill, and then attached the top cover (later type) to the bottom with black sillycone.

it looks okay, and no more leaks than usual!

The LHD sets which i got for Blair, LGM & Algirdas came with new fixing plates and i assumed that they would have double-sided sticky tape already on one part. :?

Paul,

This was one of the many discussions had by all at the time

The only answer that we could come up with is the length of the plain flat plasic bit into the front footwell.

The position of the fusebox would be different on LHD & RHD (passenger side is on the 'wrong' side of the car).

Unfortunately, we never got to actually compare the 2 items as everyone who wanted LHD ones went for the 'complete set' which were bagged up and sealed.
