plastic bit behind the ash tray - removal?

Postby Kier » Wed 10.09.2008, 19:56

Does the plastic bit behind the ash tray come out? I can get it to move but I can't get it out. I've taken my stereo out to get my hand round the back but still can't feel how I can remove it, any ideas????? I don't want to force it and risk breaking it.

cheers, kier.

Kier,
I think it's one of those bits you need to heat up with a hair drier to melt the glue before persuading it off.

Best wait for somebody else to confirm though, or try a search - you're not the first to ask.

I got mine out :-D but had to distroy it in the process  Yep the F`ing thing is glued in  same as you i took out the radio to try and push it out but it`s solid.
It`s ok for me as the ashtray isn`t going back, now replaced with a Oil temp gauge :-D

Im following this idea with a bit of interest - trying to decide if this is a good place to fit a satnav ????

Dave if i remember right that someone has done that but for me the ashtray is way to low for a Satnav, reading the oil temp gauge is bad enough :?

This is exactly what I am asking for. I got myself a Garmin in advance of my trip to Norwich. It doesn't sit right in the hole, but will fit up against the ashtray space nicely! I just need to work out how to fix the holder in place! Was thinking of putting holes in plastic at back of ashtray (for which I don't really need to take it out anyway) and then cable ties maybe?

Right I've sorted this so it's ok for the weekend, bit of a rush job but it'll do for now. In the end i decided to file down the sticky disc that came with the satnav, this allowed it to fit into the ash tray space and stick on the side. The charger cable comes in through a hole I made in the back. I may change it to the other side so I can angle it more towards to driver as at the moment it twists towards the passenger side but won't go the other way. I'll also make up something to cover and tidy it up a bit when the satnav isn't in the car.

This is how it looks in the car

I'm at work, so I don't have a pic to post. Obviously, in a RHD car, things are a little different, but in mine, a moved the digital clock down to where the blank switches used to be. The, I got a hard-wire adapter for my TomTom, and bought a vent-mount off ebay. I tapped into a keyed hot for the harness, and the wires come out through the hole left by the clock. I took apart the vent-mount. It has a ball-socket arrangement for positioning the GPS, and the socket (which would have been attached to the parts that hook it to a vent) is now mounted directly to the fascia, right below the clock-hole. The GPS completely covers the hole left by the clock, and about 95% of the screen is visible without any interference from the streering wheel. The small part that isn't, doesn't matter anyway, because there's nothing significant in that lower left corner of the screen anyway.

It seems to me that down where the ashtray is would be a little awkward for the GPS, but the RHD cars have the ashtray just below the stereo, right? I guess that wouldn't be too bad. In a LHD car, putting it where the ashtray is would put it where the shifter would block you seeing it.

Yeah where it's mounted now, as shown in the pic in my post above, I can see it fine from the driver seat. Plus I figure if it's telling me to go left or go right then I don't even need to look at it anyway!

The filtering on my computer at work doesn't allow the pictures to show. I guess it made me look a little stupid.

Here's a shot of mine.
