SE - S2 Door Panel Difference

Postby Elanlover » Mon 10.06.2013, 20:55

For those with S2 versions, perhaps you might know the answer to this question. Is there a difference in the door panels between the two versions? Specifically, I'm asking about the end of the panel where the little finisher screws in. I'm in possession of an S2 panel right now that has a small "notch" cut out right where the finisher would go as per the pic below. The only explanation I can come up with is that the finisher is different between the two versions (the S2 being larger somehow). Other than that, the notch was made after manufacturing by someone. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The notch should be there on the S2 panel and hasn't been cut in by anyone else!

Think the notch was designed with the new door seal in mind (but I'm sure I'll be corrected if my understanding constitues bovine excreta! )

If that's the case could someone take a pic of how that all fits together??? I'm struggling with how the door finisher fits into all of this and if this could be made to work on an SE :?:

That is the correct answer. I fitted the S2 door seals to my old Se and had to remove that corner to refit door cards.

Gazza, thanks for confirming. Can you comment on the door waist finisher? Is it the same, different or not used at all? Could you provide a picture of the S2 door seal so I can see how it fits? Thanks! :-D (probably need to see if I can pick up some S2 door seals now  )

What's the door waist finisher look like? My S2 is in garage having central door locking fixed so can't get a picture yet.
With the S2 seals the door weather strip on the outside needs to be moved right to the end of the door as the seal doesn't cover the last inch as it does on the se.
So u get a cleaner look on the outside.
The cutout on the card is just to accommodate the seal, which gives a better seal for the roof if I remember

The door waist finisher is a little piece of grey plastic that fits on the top - back end of the door panel like a little cap. See pic below:

It goes right where the notch is as per below.

So, I'd like to keep my door panel but I need to see some pics to understand how it all fits together.

They were not fitted on the S2. Will try and take a picture when I get the car back.

So Gaza, what's the door look like when you open it? Can you see the notch and yellow foam (which, to me, would look somewhat unfinished) or is there something under it or covering it somehow???

I don't even have finishers on my S1. Another thing to add to the list?

Never seen those finishers on any Elan.

Basically the door seal ends as a square that sits in that cutout, so u don't see the yellow foam.

All of the Fed cars had the trim caps as did the UK models up to the S2. Problem was they broke and nobody bothered to replace them. The LH side (A100B1085K) is still available for £9.49 but the RH side (A100B1086K) has been obsolete since 2002.

Apparently, everyone in the UK replaced their driver's side trim but not the passenger side.

DBE had them in their price book for $34.40

They were probably vacu-formed so not very durable. It is easy to over-tighten the screw and break the plastic.

Well done Gazza - thanks! I see you had posted in that thread a few years ago. Did some dead brain cells come back to life causing you to remember??? :-D

John, its not the finishers that's in question. Frankly, the door looks better without them except for that screw hole that's exposed

Gazza, that makes it very clear what the issue is here. The door seal itself is completely different requiring a notch to be made to fit it. Besides that fact that the seal design itself is likely better I'm guessing it looks better and does away with the useless and constantly breaking finisher. Thanks!

Now I just need to go find an S2 door seal.

Don't think S2 door seals are available anymore. If I sell my car before fitting my new drivers door seal I'll let you know

See how the weather strip on the outside goes right to the end of the door. On the SE it stops short and the seal goes on the outside.
