Door panel removal

Postby novacaine » Sun 22.09.2013, 09:27

Hi Guys,

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I can't seem to find it on LEC. I have bought a new sounds system and want to remove the door panels to pop the new speakers in.

Has anyone got any advice on what to do and what not to do?

Hi

As Geoff has pointed out, it is on Wiki and is easy to follow. I have just done the same: my passenger window failed so whilst I was repairing it I took the opportunity to replace my speakers. (New Juice JS43).

A few tips:
If you are only replacing the speakers, you can get away with NOT removing the red/orange tab on the lock button. Just carefully allow the panel to hang on in the top back corner. Needs a bit of care and gentle handling but can be done. This will save you having to buy new tabs.

As you peel off the carpet, be very careful as the glue is stronger than the carpet! It will hold onto small tufts and pull them through the carpet backing. This will leave little tuffs all over the door and small holes in the carpet where they should be! :( :( . Warm weather and a gentle scraper to ease under the layer of glue should help. I used a spray glue to put carpet back.

The plastic screw/plugs revealed when carpet is off can be awkward to get out, very often the screw will not turn in the plug and the screw slots strip. However, they are readily available and can be cut out with a sharp knife.

Best of luck.

Hello,

i replaced the plastic screws with M5 or M6 steel screws/wide flat heads and no washer; screwed in the original nuts or in new steel- self locking nuts, and i also replaced the carpets using the old ones as templates. I used carpet double side adhesive tape to do that, after a long and difficult cleaning of the surface with a sharp blade.

Note also the small screws in front of the pannel (under side mirror location) ans screws hidden underneath the glued leather center cover to be removed.

removing the small orange clip without breaking it is possible, pulling using two small thin screwdrivers. In case of breakage, I found some cheap spares anyway.
