Camber Shims

Postby par » Tue 16.05.2023, 14:16

Similar to the thread on caster shims does anyone have any surplus camber shims available?

Looking to finally getting the geometry properly set up and would need to provide 4 x each size (10.5, 11.5, 12.5 & 14mm) to be sure they had the required shims. At £4.75 ea it works out around £100 once VAT and delivery is added.

Would be good if there was a forum loan set available that would be replenished with the sizes used and offered to the next member that needed their geometry set up.

If you have the time to do so, it is very simple to make the ones that you need.

It is a case of measuring your current angle, then deciding if the balljoint needs to go in or out, and by how much (the numbers are in the manual for how much 0.5mm of shim changes the camber).

Then you only need a piece of 4mm stainless steel, cut into 21x20mm squares, and drilled appropriately.... actually, due to my lack of a drill press I drilled the holes first, then scribed a 21x20 box round it, and trimmed them to size with an angle grinder.

Even if you don't want to make them, just measuring your current camber, and current shims will tell you what you need to buy - it is a lot quicker and simpler to have a full range of shims before you start, but as you will only ever need to buy 4 as a maximum, and maybe none at all, it is quite an investment to hold a set for something you may never need again.

Unfortunately I am still having to sell my time to 'The Man' at the moment to pay for things!

The last time the front end was set up the garage ground down the existing shims and fitted them at an angle to achieve the required setting so not in a good basis to work from.

Just wondered if someone has been there before and bought the full set and prepared to sell the remaining items on to recover some of the outlay. Alternatively if I go down the route of buying a full set, gauging if there is any interest in offering the balance on for others to replenish, use then pass on to the next member who needs a full set?

I like the theory of a 'group ownership', and hope that there is enough interest to make it worthwhile.

I know that back in ancient times, when there was a superb engineer who gave his time for the benefit of LEC members, and a number of 'complete sets' were made and distributed - some must still survive, and could be the basis for your idea.... unfortunately, the devil took him away and he is now spoken of only in hushed tones, lest the County Court bailiffs actually catch up with him!

i have bought a set of shims from SJ a while ago after the specialist lotus garage that did my geometry without a set of shims... :bonk:
i then realized sometimes you gotta just bite the bullet and do the job yourself...

I Like the idea of a LEC set of shims that you can borrow from the community and use to set your geometry and then return. obviously there is a lot of money in such small package.

I'm already thinking of how it could be done in a manner to make it fair (pay in the value + postage as a deposit. and after completing your geometry you post them back and you get the "deposit" back )

I now im just wishing i had a drill press... it wouldnt be hard to make a few sets to donate to the community, and get the ball rolling at a much more affordable budget.
