Thanks FunElan, after your 'Hmm...' I took a front wheel off and spun the disc backwards whilst my other half pumped the brakes.
W/out the mass of the car amplifying it I got the same sound but thinner, so I'm thinking that this sound is magnified in braking as the car reverses. I suspect it's the play between the pins and pads...

if you take pictures of what you find id be very interesting is seeing them.
one of mine has done the same kind of noise a few days ago, althoguht i dont give it as much attention as you guys, (things work, so i just add a mental note to look into it when the car's back in the garage for other work) if i know what caused it for someone else, it certianly has a chanse of saving me time figuring it out on mine.

I have found my front clonk after hitting a pot hole.
