For those who are sticking with the stock caliper, will it be on a seprate caliper bracket or a direct bolt on?

The standard rear caliper can be retained in the same position as present, no need to change anything on the caliper side of things, brackets or other wise.
The disc I have selected is in the same relative position as the standard one and is of a similar thickness and the same 100mm PCD.

236mm diameter x 12.5mm thick the standard one is 236mm diameter by 12.65mm do not think it is worth worring about 0.15mm (0.006") as they usually rust before they are worn out!

Re: rear hubs/discs

Postby bobbrown » Fri 03.10.2008, 17:57

I have had a quote to get the hubs machined and it comes in at £102.37 each hub for 20 off 10 axle sets
Now if we can get to 20 axle sets (40hubs) total the cost comes down to £89.69 each hub and no doubt if there are more then the price will come down even further.
There is one other cost to add in and that is delivery and I may be able to get them delivered in pairs direct or even if they are all sent here the one off delivery cost for the whole lot is not likely to add too much + delivery to you say £6.00
If any one is thinking I will wait for the second run then beware the cost is related to numbers and if only 10 people are interested on the second run the price will be higher!
As it stands there are two list one in this topic and one in the ""Hi-Spec rear conversion, sliding pins RIP" topic and there is a couple of people in there that are not on this list.

I think as all the other parts required to complete this conversion are readily available from motor factors and alike then I will transfer this part to the group buy thread viewtopic.php?f=85&t=13635 and ask that if you want the hubs, not a may be, you add your selves to that list.

I will list the other parts that are required to use the standard/ Dorman caliper shortly once I had a chance to look them up.

Also I will need your money before I place the order as it is a lot of money when you multiply it up.

Bob

Just to clarify, is that £102.37 each person for a pair of hubs or just for each hub, making it £204.74 per pair?

the price is per hub not per axle set

does get confusing at times

Bob

How long will they take to make and when do you think they will start.

Just that time is a little factor in whether to go for them or not.

It looks like the numbers of people is getting close to making it more ecomomic (20) at £89.69 each (£179.38 per axle set)

The company quoted 4 to 5 weeks delivery but I am sure that is just the time they put on every thing, just a round sort of number.
I can call them on Monday to discuss.
The other issue will be how they what payment, do they want payment up front or are they willing to wait till the order is due for delivery, I say that as it usually takes a couple of weeks to get all the money in.
I am not in this instance willing to pay first and collect the money after as it amounts to quite a bit around £3500.00 so will need the money up front.

I will keep you posted but I would think it is likley to be three to four weeks tops!

Good News

I've been in touch with another company and it is looking like the price will drop to £65.24 each or £130.48 per axle set anodised black + post and packaging I will need to see what the weight comes out to get the cost.
I will confirm the price tomorrow but as of now it is looking good

That puts the price more inline with what I ws thinking in the first place
I had shopped around and had three companies priced the job and they were all similar give or take a quid or two just hope the last one (4th) is not a mistake!

This is probably a stupid question, but i've read through the thread (unlike stef and Gary :-D :-D ) but can't find the disc fittment for a UK car........

I have seen the list for the USofA cars, but nothing from over here.

From the numbers I've found in the thread, are we looking at this one?

Or is it off something else?

(I know i said i wasn't interested, but i can't pass up a group buy oportunity :D )
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

nice cheap site
Almost correct just the disc thickness is wrong
There are a lot of variations and I will try to make a list but here is one of the many
FR Brake Disc for Vauxhall, Astra 1.4i (10/91-98)
Model: DSK 117
Manufactured by: APEC
Solid - Mountings 4
Disc diameter 236.0mm
Disc thickness 12.5mm
Overall height 41.0mm
Centre diameter 60.0mm
Minimum thickness 9.7mm

£14.36 the pair
The critical part is the disc thickness (as well as the diameter) as there are other thickness and we need 12.5mm but at £14.36 the pair it would not threaten you life style too much even if you made a mistake ordered the wrong ones as long as you do not fit them, and it would probably cost almost that much to send them back.
heres a few more
Vauxhall, Astra 1.3 (79-84)
Vauxhall, Astra 1.3 (84-9/89)
Vauxhall, Astra 1.4 (10/89-9/91)
Vauxhall, Astra 1.4i (10/91-98)
Vauxhall, Cavalier 1.6 (10/88-9/91)
Vauxhall, Corsa 1.0 (97-00)
Corsa 1.2, 1.4 (93-00)

Forgive my "brainfart' but are the rear bearings sealed units or are they raceless roller bearings and therfore use the hub's inner surface as the race. I can't remember at the mo' if it was the lotus or my old 'Ghini that had this setup.

The rear is two tapered roller bearings(inner and outer to each bearing) with a seal on the inside and a cap on the outside.
they are shown here
hub_sec_rr_sml.jpg

nice and cheap if you use VW ones the seal is a bit of a debate but as the ones from SJ are around £4.00.

..as I said" Brainfart"... I ended up answering my own question and found my old RWB. They are separate but they do have they're own races included with the bearings. This is what I was asking about. Unfortunately the pic really doesn't answer thiis hence the question.
