Well Folks, I have some news.

Seems Dave has landed himself in the hospital from a bad pneumonia!!

His wife says he is recovering and may be home next week.

Thus, I am told to pass on to you the bars are "on hold." I told her no one will care about the bars, but we do care about Dave!

Hope he's back soon

Last year about this time of year, I bought my Elan in Lansing MI and drove it back through Grand Rapids to Milwaukee. Dave took time away from his busy tax work to spend some time talking to someone who knew little about them. I really appreciated it, and found Dave to be a great guy.

Oh mi gawd. I come home after work today and sitting at my doorstep is a large, rectangular box. I open it up and to my surprise - its a strut bar! Going to install it Saturday. Many thanks Dave. Please PM me with the total I owe you for the bar, powder coating, shipping and your tip!

Also, could you suggest some install tips that you think would help the unititiated............like me?

Hi Blair! Glad the bar got there OK. As for install, it's pretty easy. Pull up the carpet in the trunk/boot just a bit by the strut tops. You'll see three small nuts (the strut mounts), one in the center of the three (the strut - don't touch), and one slightly offset (the one you want). It's a 17mm bolt with the nut inside the wheel well where the strut enters the body. There is a triangle flange thing welded onto the nut, so you don't have to put a wrench on it, but it is not attached to the car - so be ready to catch it. What I usually do is start to loosen the 17mm bolt, then while fully removing the bolt, find the nut with my other hand. I've got a pretty good wingspan, so some may not be able to reach both. While removal won't require two people (the nut will just fall down under the car - but be ready), install may if you can't reach. I've included two longer bolts with the bar in case you need them. The extra thickness of the bar may be just enough to cause the stock bolts not to reach the nut on reinstall. My car used the stock bolts just fine, but some who installed the bar have said they needed the longer ones.

As for the carpet fitment, see page 3 of this thread for pics of what I did.

Blair, there's no rear wheel well liners. You can just look up under the wheel well and see the flange in question. Dave's instructions are correct and just check the Elan service and parts manual to get an idea of the parts there and how they're connected. I just had to make some tiny slits in the carpet with a razor knife to slide the ends of the bar thru.
