Wheel Bearing Grease

A very simple question, I think. Here is a picture of grease which seems to be escaping from a front wheel hub. Is this a simple job to fix? I just need to replace an easily accessible seal which I can do in about 20 minutes without any special tools, right? Guidance would be welcome.

The front wheel bearing is a sealed double bearing/seal assembly. Replacing it requires removing the driveshaft, removing the large snap ring and if the bearing doesn't drift out easily, removing the hub carrier and taking to to a press to push out the bearing. Sometimes it comes apart easily but usually it is a real job to get the bearing out.

Any chance you addes grease to the bearing or greased the driveshaft when putting things back together? If so, clean out or clean up the extra grease and clean the wheel and trim cap. The front bearings are not supposed to be greased - they are sealed.

As John says it's unlikely to be "wheel bearing grease" as it might be on the rear ... even that's unlikely to find its way onto the outer of the wheel.

Like John, I'd suggest stripping it down, give it a good clean and see if it reoccurs.

Thank you. I shall start by cleaning it up. I haven't applied grease, so perhaps it is a remnant from the previous owner. I just don't want it to get onto the brake disc.

Oh Whoopee! That's the exact job I have to do on Saturday!
