Do You also want a Haltech ECU.?.

Well, Mark and I do, and we hope that starting this thread, it will be possible to gather all the info on this subject i one place, so we all get the benefit from our collective effords on this. We ask all with knowledge on this to chip in, and let us all know. 8)

OK.!.
The damm thing is now on my desk, the manual printed out, car prepared to install the "thing", so it's just a matter of a few minutes, before I can turn the key. Ha.ha, Right.!. :roll:

Problems start there on the desk.: How do you connect the damm thing to the main wire harness. :?:

Q. 1.
I know the pin-out on the Haltech is not the same as the GM ECU, but comparing the writeout on this do not make it clear. Which wires has to be shifted from one pin to another. :?:

Q. 2.
Lots of pins on the Haltech is not connected at all.(N/C)
Some of these pins are importain. Ex. pin A4 should controle "sec.throttles control solinoid". Can this not be supported. :?

As said, we hope that his thread will end-up with a complete "How-to-do" and help all members, who are going the same way as us. :idea:

I also have the Haltech and it's sitting in the box ready to install as soon as the new Turbo is in and can be fired to life.

I know the pin-out on the Haltech is not the same as the GM ECU, but comparing the writeout on this do not make it clear. Which wires has to be shifted from one pin to another.


I have that pin out correction somewhere at work I believe. I will scan it and put on this lnk when I find it. If someone else has it which I'm sure they do (Ashman) then they can publish it first.

This is the pinout modification I received from Haltech after I supplied them with the Elan ECU pinout schematic.

Hope this all helps. I will ask my engine guys if they had to change anything from this description, from memory I think they said it was all OK as it was.

Notes for conversion of wiring loom to suit Haltech E6GMX ECU.

The 2 connnectors on the original Delco loom have 24 and 32 pins respectively.

The 24 Pin connector is labeled A1 thru A12 on the top row and B1 thru B12 on the bottom row.

The 32 Pin connector is labeled C1 thru C16 on the top row and D1 thru D16 on the bottom row.

To use the E6GMX with the Lotus Elan there is 5 wires that must have their location on these connectors moved.

The modifications required are;

Connector A.

A1 = OK
A2 = Wire from A7 to be moved here (This is Dig Out1 from the Haltech)
A3 = OK
A4 = Wire from C1 to be moved here (This is Dog Out2 from the Haltech)
A5 = OK
A6 = OK
A7 = Move this wire to A2
A8 = OK
A9 = OK
A10 = OK
A11 = OK
A12 = OK

B1 = OK
B2 =OK
B3 = OK
B4 = Wire from D10 to be moved here (This is a GND)
B5 = OK
B6 = OK
B7 = OK
B8 = OK
B9 = OK
B10 = OK
B11 = OK
B12 = Move This wire to D7 (O2 Sensor Input to Haltech)

C1 = Move this wire to A4
C2 = OK (This is PWMOUT2 from Haltech)
C3 = OK
C4 = OK
C5 = OK
C6 = OK
C7 = You can disconnect the wire here and this is PWMOUT1 from the Haltech you can use for whatever you want
C8 = OK
C9 = OK
C10 = OK
C11 = OK
C12 = OK
C13 = OK
C14 = OK
C15 = Wire from D16 to be moved here (Injector Output 2 from Haltech)
C16 = OK

D1 = OK
D2 = OK
D3 = OK
D4 = OK
D5 = OK
D6 = OK
D7 = Wire from B12 to this pin (O2 Sensor Input to Haltech)
D8 = OK
D9 = OK
D10 = Move this wire to B4
D11 = OK
D12 =OK
D13 = OK
D14 = OK
D15 = OK
D16 = Move this wire to C15

When setting the E6GMX up you will need to configure the outputs in the Haltech software as below to get the correct feature on the correct output

Digout1 = A/C Clutch control
Digout2 = Dual Intake Valve

PWMOUT1 = Available to use as an extra output
PWMOUT2 = Wastegate control
PWMOUT3 = Available to use as an extra output
PWMOUT4 = Available to use as an extra output

Power steering switch input is not required with the Haltech E6GMX …not used
EGR Control is not supported with the E6GMX.
Knock control is not supported with E6GMX.

I think they got i all wrong. :?

They have mistaken "to" - "From", so it is the opposite way around. Ex. wire "FROM" C15 is to be moved "TO" D16 :!:

I have both pin-outs on standard ECU and the Haltech, which I include below.

Q. O2-sensor input on both pin-outs are on D7 and should therefore be ok, so is now down to what to do with all the sensors which is not connected to the Haltech :?:

To tune the darm thing we all need a wideband O2 sensor. I have just ordred a Innovate Motorsports LC-1, which can be connectet direct into the Haltech. Price $199,00

How hard can it be. :?: 8) :wink:

I have a spare Haltech that I was hoping to sell to fund the gearbox rebuild (I never got round to fitting it because all .ecu files showed no problems and it was all too difficult to work it out). If you go and spoil my plans by forcing me to fit it...

I think they got it right, it just depends on how you choose to describe the connectors from one perspective or the other.

As for what you do with the unused sensors like O2 and knock...not much you can do really as the Haltech doesn't have them as inputs (a particular shame for the knock sensor). About the best you could do is to wire it up to a big light on the fascia...

Pretty hard :) While some people talk about getting a basic map and then driving around with a wideband sensor on the car to tweak the settings, that's going to be (a) dangerous and (b) tortuous.

Really you need to sit it on a dyno and have someone who knows their job do a proper map from start to finish, covering all inputs for rpm, load and boost. That's supposed to be happening to mine any day now (ha ha, heard that one before). However, along the way we're also going to investigate making some changes that for now will remain secret but if successful should transform the power delivery of the car.

Let's just say a "restrictor" in the design has been identified. I don't think anyone has done anything with this restriction yet, but the Haltech can handle it - so I've been told. We're going to try and get rid of this restriction, but I'm keeping schtum for the time being in case it doesn't pan out and then I can slink away quietly...

Sorry Philbo, but it's not, and I'm pretty sure about that. :!:

As the pin-out on the Haltech is fixed, the ONLY way you can change the connection is to move indevidual wires in the main lump from one position to another on the connector.

An ex.
You say.: A2=Wire from A7 to be moved here. But there is no wire on A7, and Haltech don't read on A2. Obvious false. :!:

I say.: Wire FROM A2 is to be moved TO A7. This will connect the A/C clutch controle from the main harnes to the Haltech pin A7, just like it was mend to be. 8)

Also, there is no need to move D7 (O2 sensor signal) as both the GM and Haltech are reading the sensor signal on this pin (D7).

Please Philbo, check again, and you will see the light....... :wink:

By the way, generally I think you have been given wrong info from Haltech. Are you sure this is for the E6GMX and not E6GM, as there is a difference in pinout for those two. :?:

What I meant was it just depends on whether you think when they say "A2" you think they mean A2 on the Haltech side or the A2 on the Delco connector. As far as I can see on the instructions it's not made clear - except by the context. As you say, once you look at the actual schematics it's obvious which way around it's supposed to be.

I'll check what happened to the D7 input.

Ironically, my Haltech E6GMX is being worked on today. I know this because they've just phoned me to say that they've broken one of the ECU leads - one that goes from the ECU to the car loom.

I don't suppose anyone has one of these to hand that I could borrow - I'll ensure that when we get the new one from Haltech it'll replace it. Unfortunately there isn't a UK distributor so I'll probably have to source the replacement from Australia, which could take a while.

Hey, sorry I haven't been around lately guys. I thought I sent you guys detailed instructions/info/notes and my maps via Email...didn't you receive it?

I sent it to both you & Mark on the same day, I think he told me he received the message...if you didn't let me know & I will resend it.

At any rate, here is the message I sent (less the maps, but I can send those to anyone who needs them, just let me know).

My .02 on the tuning is that I do not see what difference it makes whether on or off a dyno. All Dyno-Jets I have checked into are inertia type. This means you WILL NOT be able to tune any better (and I think it will be worse, personally) than real-world tuning. If there were a means to vary the load/resistance of the rollers, THEN we you would have a valuable tuning tool. As it is, I don't see an advantage over road-tuning.

If I floor the thing on the rollers, there is only a certain amount of intertia present. This will not be nearly as much as say, if I floor it while driving up a steep hill. Now, maybe I have missing something here, and if so that is good, as I was really happy about renting a dyno by the hour and tuning 'till my heart was content! Upon further thought decided it would pretty much be wasted money as I would have to do real-world tuning after the fact anyway (usually done by driving/checking logs/changing tables). I just do not really see how you can get a good tune across the entire RPM range/Load points with a static amount of inertia.... :?:

Anyway, I guess it is up to everyone to decide what they think is best, maybe some will have access to better dynos than I do.

I compared the schematic for the E6GMX with that of the E6GM and they are the same, so my notes should apply to both.

Firstly, I have an E6GM, not the E6GMX. I checked a while back, and as far as I remember everything was the same as far as wiring. I think they can use the same maps also. I would make sure to become familiar with the documentation. Even though This should enable you to bypass most of it, it is still good to be familiar with the setup process in case things don't work out.

OK, first things first. Let's make sure the timing is dead on with the stock ECU. Changing the trigger angle in the Haltech setup will also do this, but in order for my map to work we will need to be close. My angle number is such that it is dead on with the stock ECU. Hopefully, if you set yours dead on as well, my map will be accurate for you. (Once you start the engine, verify this with a timing light and by locking the timing at 10 in the Haltech setup.)

Next, let's get the wiring taken care of! You will need to Move some wires in the harness, or you will need to make an "adaptor harness" to take care of the differences in the pinouts.

Personally I went the later route, and I made an adapter for only the wires I needed. My thinking was that there were some differences in comparing the two pinouts, so I didn't want to take any chances. However, I understand that several of the Isuzu folks have just changed the pins without any problems.


Differences we need to take care of:

Function: Stock: Haltech

A/C Control A2 C2
Injetctor C15 D16
Secondaries A4 NA*

* If the E6GMX has an RPM activated output, you may be able to use it. Basically, they are open when the engine is off, and while the engine is above ~4000 RPM. They are closed anytime the engine is running and the RPMs are below ~4000.

Grounding pin A4 will close them, lifting the ground will open them again. I had a really nice RPM switch made be a guy at www.bakerelectronix.com. This way I figure I can play around with it on the dyno and see what RPM is best for power.

Next, Pins D3 and D10 need to be grounded.

A jumper needs to be put into place from the aux +5V A4 or A5 on plug 2 to the EST bypass on pin D5.

There are other steps involved in setting up a map from scratch, but it sounds like you guys both have a similar setup to me so I would suggest just loading up my map and watching the wideband O2. Of course, double check all this information against the pinout for your own ECU to make sure they are the same and I didn't make any mistakes.

This all seems kind of complicated at first, but it really is not bad at all once you get into it. I have attached my map which while I am no pro, I think is pretty darned good....the dyno will soon tell.

I agree to some extent if you only have a Dyno-Jet in your area, but you may want to search out a Mustang Dyno. This allows variable load and variable rpm "holds" to tune all through the rev range at various loads. I've got to believe this is much less time consuming and much more exact than road tuning. Not to mention much less distracting! :wink:
