Not stupid at all....

....the only really stupid question is the one you don't ask in case you look stupid!

The air will be coming from the solid pipe through the wing, into the rubber 'dog-leg' shaped hose, and into the engine (from right to left in the picture)

Actually, what I read is that "there are no stupid questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots."

Sorry Andy, I didn't even read the posts leading up to Dave's. I just saw his reference to stupid questions, and felt like saying that. It's one of my favorite "demotivational" posters. I didn't mean to imply you had asked a stupid question, or were an idiot -- that would be me. :|

Sorry about the no boost post help. I was doing some back reading and thought that it was a similar problem to the one i was having. The topic heading Mountain chips was starting to be less relevant. I know i get inpatient waiting for my questions to be answered. Maxine keeps telling me to give people a chance. They always answer your questions and people are not there just for you. Im just not used to computer etiquette and waiting for replys. I just get frustrated and panic that i dont know enough to do the jobs i need to do. I was just expecting to do little maintenance jobs. Not expecting to have to study the workings of a full break upgrade and exhausts and the do's and don'ts. What to buy and where. Plus dealing with the problems that we have been having. To be honest i dont know if i'm up to it. The jobs ive done so far have been a nightmere to do. For me anyway. Up until now it's been more stressfull then a pleasure. And learning again has been difficult. Up until last month the only tools we owned where a bike spanner and a hammer. So anyway no more double posts. And i'm sorry for getting up a few noses. All i know is iv'e learnt more in the last few months then i have in the last 20yrs. Thanks Andy

No problem. As I say it's just best to keep to the one thread because then there's a logical progression of ask question, get solution, report results and then move onto next possibility until the problem is solved.
If it's been confirmed that the turbo is able to spin freely (which I haven't seen) and that the wastegate is free (which I have), then the next most obvious solution could be that there is a loose hose somewhere that is allowing the turbo's air pressure to leak away.
If it was a slight leak somewhere (from something like a split hose) then you'd hear a hiss while the engine was running, which you could trace by using a piece of pipe with one end against your ear like a stethoscope.
If it was a large leak somewhere (from something like a hose having popped off completely) then you need to trace the path of air from the turbo through the intercooler and into the intake plenum (the bit with "DOHC 16V" written on it).
You could undo the jubilee clip going into the throttle body, rev the engine and see if it blows air in your face. That would be a good next step.

I took the hose off the turbo and the blades moved free it looks in quite good nick going off the photos of others Ive seen. I replaced the small bore hose to the wastegate capsule and the hose coming from the bottom round the right of the engine to a i think sensor with a red and black wires with a glass top to look through. The hose had the MBC in it. And what a pig of a job that was Ive no skin left on my hands. I removed the big top hose there was air being sucked into the DOHC 16v part. The pipe coming out of the right wing i could feel air coming out when you drop the throttle. I think i could also hear something over run when you switch off. So i think the turbo is working. I tried to listen for any leeks but i couldn't here anything that sounded like a leek. Andy

Andy,
Everything sounds about right, the only remaining unknown appears to be the wastegate. Even if the capsule and rod 'feel' as though they are working as they should everything points to a wastegate stuck partially open. It is possible it has broken internally (disc off shaft) although that would be a rare one. Have you tried to remove the capsule hose at the capsule itself and plug the end. Then try a SHORT test drive, this will stop the wastegate from opening at all so you would normally get overboost as the spring inside the capsule closes the wastegate (pressure from the small turbo line opens the capsule by exterting boost pressure on the diaphragm) If you get overboost you have eliminated the wastegate as the cause of zero boost.

Cheers it gives me something to go at. What title would an engine diagramme be with a picture of the engine. Im looking for the throttle body. Would this only be in the manuels? I cant find it in the wiki. Its not the hose from the right wing in the photo is it? Andy

The throttle body is the metal bit between the intake plenum and the intake hose (coincidentally with the throttle cable attached to it).
Dave's uppermost green arrow in his pic on the last page points straight at it.

Its blowing warm air when the throttle is dipped. Sorry it sucks air in at that end it blows from the wing.

Which sounds right, the direction of the turbo boost air flow through the intercooler and out the inner wing is as shown below

Thanks guys i will have a go at blocking the actuation capsule in the morning. That's if my fingers are up to it. I cut them to ribbons putting the bottom hose on the capsule. Two hoses in three hours and one was only 6cm long. It must be a record. I was thinking to change them all. Yes right. Not until it needs the engine out. Better not tempt fate. I seem to spend more time picking bolts and spanners up that i have dropped in the engine bay than i do work. I'm going to tie them to a piece of string next time. Anyway back to work they wont pay me for being on this all night. Well they will but not for long. Cheers Andy.

Andy, Should be quite easy, just take it off from above as its clearly visible (see red arrow in picture above) Just plug the rubber hose with a screw, bolt or a golf tee works really well. NOTE: just a very short test run to see of you get boost because this will send the turbo into overboost if your wastegate is closed and all your intake hoses connected. I mention the hoses because after reading all your posts you had a couple of runs after the chip was installed and enjoyed 0.9, ESM notes in his install guide to make sure all your hoses and clamps are good as the extra boost will make them 'balloon' and you may have blown a hose off the intercooler, as that's the first point of any major air resistance. Plugging the boost hose is simply to try and eliminate a wastegate opening too early, check all the larger hoses are connected before you go out.
Good luck !

Well I'm back at it again (I can here the groans). I have plugged the hose coming off the bottom of the actuation capsule. All the other hoses connected. I took it for a short run when you put your foot down. The turbo gauge needle moves 5 or 6mm but i cant say i feel any boost. It is the hose coming off the capsule you wanted me to plug, and not the end the short bit of hose goes into? Andy

No, the capsule end can be open (this should leave the wastegate shut) but the other end must be blanked off.

Ok, so no boost, or very little would, IMHO, point to one of two things (assuming turbo is ok and spinning freely). Waste gate is partially stuck open or a hose is off somewhere. You said all hoses were connected, did you confirm the large hose that comes from the turbo that runs along the front of the engine and into the inner fender (sorry wing!) is then connected to the square looking box that is tucked up under there? (it is VERY tough to see so try following the hose with your hand) Its the one shown below and should be tight on the black box (AKA intercooler) Check all of the hoses are connected and the clamps arrowed are tight.

The computer has been down a couple of days. Which stuffed me half way through the job. I blocked the actuation capsule and tried it. The gauge moves to the first notch but i cant say i felt anything boost ways. Geoff said i blocked the wrong end. So i took the pipe off the capsule and left that being able to breath. I then blocked the end of the pipe that i took off the actuation capsule. And then went for a short run. The same results as when i blocked the capsule. The turbo spins free when i take the hose off and use a finger. And as far as i can see the hoses are correct. Esprit 888. The top hose in the diagram is that the hard hose that goes through the wing and then up to the throttle body?
